To the far right there is the remains of a whale spine. When Lewis and Clark made their way to the Pacific, they stumbled on a dead whale and remarked on its stink. Sometime in the 2000's a different whale washed ashore and was buried because of the stink, and I guess after a while schoolkids petitioned to exhume it and articulate it and make it into a site. And that's what this is. It's sad when whales die, they are too good for this world, but it's pretty important to see this stuff, the skeleton or the decomposing body, because you don't really get how important they are, even in death, to the ecosystem until you do, I think.
Speaking of dead things, there was also a dead whale near Beard's Hollow (after the dead captain of the Vandalia that washed ashore there). I am now averaging one dead whale viewing a year. Pic is of a whale skeleton installation marking the spot Lewis and Clark smelled a dead whale. #itsdarkinhere
