Today's Lines at Lunchtime is 'Tree' By Jane Hirshfield!

There are openings in our lives
of which we know nothing.
Through them
the belled herds travel at will,
long-legged and thirsty, covered with foreign dust.

THE ENVOY
By #JaneHirshfield
One day in that room, a small rat.
Two days later, a snake.
Who, seeing me enter,
whipped the long stripe of his
body under the bed,
then curled like a docile house-pet.
I don’t know how either came or left.
Later, the flashlight found nothing.
"Let them not say: they did nothing."
In an age of silence, resistance is witness. No Kings. No idols. No submission — only the courage to speak, to act, to remember.

You work with what you are given — today I am blessed, today I am given luck. It takes the shape of a dozen ripening fruit trees, a curtain of pole beans, a thicket of berries. It takes the shape of a dozen empty hours. In them is neither love nor love's muster of losses, in them there is no chance for harm or for good. Does even my humanness matter? A bear would be equally happy, this August day, fat on the simple sweetness plucked between thorns. There are some who may think, "How pitiful, how lonely." Other must murmur, "How lazy." I agree with them all: pitiful, lonely, lazy. Lost to the earth and to heaven, thoroughly drunk on its whiskeys, I wander my kingdom.

August Day by Jane Hirshfield
THE WORLD IS NO MORE THAN THE BELOVED'S SINGLE FACE
By #MirzaGhalib, tr. #JaneHirshfield
The world is no more than the beloveds single face;
in the desire of the One to know its own beauty,
we exist.
But they guard me, these small pains,
from growing sure
of myself and perhaps forgetting.

TO HEAR THE FALLING WORLD
By #JaneHirshfield
Only if I move my arm a certain way,
it comes back.
Or the way the light bends in the trees
this time of year,
so a scrap of sorrow, like a bird, lights on the heart.
I carry this in my body, seed
in an unswept corner, husk-encowled and seeming safe.
happy #smallpoemsunday, this weekend, this holiday, this bit of #JaneHirshfield
#JaneHirshfield is not only an amazing poet but a Zen Buddhist practitioner. I discovered this lesser-known poem in a collection called What Book?! Buddha Poems from Beat to HipHop.

#Zen pretty much comes down to three things–
everything changes;
everything is connected;
pay attention.

Green-Striped Melons BY JANE HIRSHFIELD They lie under stars in a field. They lie under rain in a field. Under sun. Some people are like this as well— like a painting hidden beneath another painting. An unexpected weight the sign of their ripeness.

yesterday we ripened a bit

YOU WHO WANT
You who want
knowledge,
seek the Oneness
within.
There you
will find
the clear mirror
already waiting.

Hirshfield's poem, On the Fifth Day, addresses climate change and the fact that science can't be ignored by merely refusing to speak about it. Facts matter.

a small-sized mystery Jane Hirshfield Leave a door open long enough, a cat will enter. Leave food, it will stay. Soon, on cold nights, you'll be saying "excuse me" if you want to get out of your chair. But one thing you'll never hear from a cat is "excuse me." Nor Einstein's famous theorem. Nor "The quality of mercy is not strained." In the dictionary of Cat, mercy is missing. In this world where much is missing, a cat fills only a cat-sized hole. Yet your whole body turns toward it again and again because it is there.
