Views from the south side of Mullach Mór; the sequence runs from SE to SW (2025-04-05; Michael O'Connell)
One more tweet - to celebrate a stunning #karstic #landscape!
Some of the landscape views that I experienced and attempted to capture as photos on a glorious early April afternoon / evening ☺️ 2025. 7/7
view of Mullach Mór from roadside at L. Gealáin. Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) flowering beside road
Large turlough/lake system (L. Gealáin; the white lake) with Mullach Mór & Knockanes in background
A circular clump of Cladium mariscus (saw sedge) on marl. Youngest and most vigorous growth on the periphery; within die-back in progress
A Little Egret among the reeds at L. Gealáin. There was a pair present on Saturday (2025-04-05; MO'C)
Saturday pm at Mullach Mór, the #karstic #Burren #landscape was looking its best. On the roadside at L. Gealáin, blackthorn in flower, turlough unseasonally low exposing the white marl, clumps of sedge (much saw sedge) & a pair of shy egrets. The uplands beckoned 1/7

Ruins of Cistercian abbey of Corcomroe (constructed: early13C) on the fertile soils of the NE Burren, Co. Clare, Ireland Also known as: Sancta Maria de petra fertili - St. Mary of the fertile rock
To mark #WorldSoilDay. Photos from Oughtmama uplands, northern #Burren, Co. Clare, Ireland. Uplands #karstic limestone with little/no soil cover; in the valleys calcareous #soil derived from drift (last glaciation, 20 ka ago) are the basis of pastoral (pasture & arable in earlier times) farming
Loch Gealáin (the white lake; marl-rich turlough) in foreground close to maximum extent; Mullach Mór (large peak) uplands in the background
Woody vegetation struggles due to high grazing pressure (goats; also cattle); erratics (limestone boulders resting on limestone) are common
Whitethorn (Crataegus monogyna) in a small area with some soil cover. Yew survives on the cliff edge (far right of photo) where it is out of reach of grazers
Flock of feral goats. The goats are more or less permanent denizens at Mullach Mór. Patches of hazel scrub survive in the lowlands
#NewYear2024 & time for a small indulgence: the #karstic landscape at Mullach Mór, #Burren, Co. Clare. May is the best month to see the wonderful flora but the #landscape & #geology can be enjoyed at anytime & especially in winter. Photos: November 2023
