The Kasuga-taisha temple is also the reason for all the deer. One of the deities enshrined here is said to have ridden to Nara on a sacred white deer, and ever since the deer of Nara have been protected helpers of the gods.

The 'Sunazuri-no-fuji' (砂ずりの藤 'Sand-brushing Wisteria') is estimated to be 800 years old!
