Key West artist Tamera Foster stained glass titled Old Man Under the Sea is available at this Art Gallery and a few others in Key West. I moved to the Keys in 2016 – prior to that I lived in multiple parts of Florida including Miami and Fort Lauderdale as a young person – I graduated from Tarpon Springs High School on the West Coast. Attended Broward Community College and Later University of South Florida (Tampa) where I received my master’s degree. I also lived in Tampa, Jacksonville and Middleburg FL throughout my adult life until I moved here in 2016- In between all of that I lived briefly – a few years in Michigan – Mt Morris just outside of Flint and in Flint MI (as a teenager). I was born in Virginia but was an infant when I left there so that’s just a birthplace. I began doing stained glass art in Fort Lauderdale while attending Broward Community College. So back in the 80” s. But then life, school, raising children etc. began and stained glass went on the back burner until I moved to the Keys. My mother, who passed away in 2016 had a large collection of glass and equipment for stained glass as she had taken up the art and did stained glass for sale for about 15 years before her passing. She did quite well with it and did a little bit of glass etching as well.
The Key West Shady Palm Art Gallery has this stained glass titled Old Man Under the Sea and more of Key West artist Tamera Foster. So I am back into the art of stained glass utilizing much of her collection of glass. But “oh my goodness” has the cost of finding new glass gone up in price over the years- BUT hasn’t everything. I get most of my inspiration from the ocean and abstract art. Occasionally I will create a flower or birds as well. But the tropical stuff seems to be the most fun. Its so colorful. I still work full time in the school system, so I create mostly on the weekends. I am open to discussing with anyone a custom piece and we can figure out the cost and how long it would take to make etc. That’s how my mother did her glass business, mostly custom pieces to a person’s wishes and dimensions.

Key West artist Nancy Adams painting titled Keys Jellies is available at this Art Gallery and a few others in Key West. Keys Jellies My dreams allow me to free my mind and play with unique color combinations. I often paint first thing in the am while my dream recollection is still fresh. giclee on paper matted in white 20.00" x 16.00 giclee on gallery wrapped canvas with floater frame 14.00" x 11.00 giclee on paper matted in white 14.00" x 11.00 giclee on paper matted in white 10.00" x 8.00" tile 8.00" x 6.00" Since my very first visit to the Florida Keys soon after college at 22, I was blown away with the amazing colors, the land to water ratio, the laid back vibe and of course the music & art culture. It was love at first visit and after dozens more visits, I vowed to someday live here...permanently....and that dream came true. I'm finally able to paint and share with the world the colorful beauty in contrast with the chaotic, the musicality of the water and wind, with the incredibly amazing pinch me moments of painting while dolphins swim by! My husband likes to say I'm in my element while in my studio, but I have to say my element is being surrounded by nature, whether kayaking, painting, running or exploring because it all leads to the joy of creating vibrant and colorful works of art. Every day is an absolute thrill to pick up the brush and paint what I see or what I have dreamed or fire up the torch to create some crazy tincan character, and my hope is that you are uplifted by my enthusiasm for this beautiful paradise through my art
The Key West Art Center and Gallery has this painting titled Chicks on the Beach and more of Key West artist Nancy Adams Chicks on the Beach Even chicken families enjoy sand between their toes. Showed in galleries and outdoor art festivals in Texas and as far south as Key West, including Key West Craft show for a number of years as TheTinArmadillo and demonstrating to children in elementary schools all over Texas the importance of recycling in return for the cafeteria's tin cans.
This painting called Kayak Obsession was done by our own Key West Artist Nancy Adams . Kayak Obsession When the water is insanely calm, I have to take the kayak out to start the day. Still working with the tinwork, but truly settling in with my love of color and painting the imagery surrounding my long time relationship with the Florida Keys. My goal is to combine the metalwork with my painting, which I have done on occasion, but until I’m happy with how they combine consistently I mostly work separately with each medium enjoying the creative contrast between the two.
This piece of Key West Art titled Rainbow Swimmers was created by artist Nancy Adams. Rainbow Swimmers The ocean is filled with rainbow swimmers in harmony with the waves and water light gallery wrapped giclee canvas with white floating frame 20.00" x 16.00" giclee on paper matted in white 20.00" x 16.00" giclee on paper matted in white 14.00" x 11.00" giclee on paper matted in white 10.00" x 8.00" tile 8.00" x 6.00" As a recent Anne McKee Grant recipient, my current artwork consists of painting the amazing color combinations in land, sky and waterscapes that only the Keys environment seems to offer. I am traveling from one end of the Keys to the other, recording the wildlife and waterways off the beaten path as well as the iconic oddities and attractions that make this island chain the diverse entity I have always believed it is. Included in this study is the use of my recycled tin to create whimsical sculptures inspired by those that inhabit the keys. Also Included in the group of art pieces will be combined paintings with tin and found objects recovered while traversing the islands. My goal is to show how this fantastic place can embrace the rough with the refined. That even though we try to build UP we a know that nature will always win to rule the roost.

Red heaven This beautiful pine needle basket is one of a kind. A large basket it measures 10” by 3 inches tall. The Angel Tenerife in the middle adds to the variety of stitches in this basket coiled predominantly with with red cotton, embellished with natural raffia. Her pine needle baskets have fabulous touches — shells, rough-hewn sodalite beads, driftwood, white deer antlers and even shark cartilage. She harvests what she can legally, and buys the rest from trusted, fair trade sources. Many of her baskets have hardwood bottoms made from buttonwood or black mangrove, mahogany or seagrape. The thin slices of wood give the baskets a sturdy base, but are finished so lovingly as to be silky.
Dreaming peace This very large (13” x 3.5” tall) handmade pine needle basket is a work of art. The center is Cuban mahogany. This is a functional basket made to be used or displayed. The Pune needles are natural untreated as is the raffia and dark green cotton used to coil the pine needles The baskets are sturdy — functional enough to catch car keys and change. Some are fantastic shapes with undulating ropes radiating out from the center that stand alone as sculpture. Others, with intricate designs, are like artwork to be hung on the walls. Wielhouwer, a native of Big Pine Key for the past 36 years, said she lost a lot of her belongings in the storm, but not her desire to create. She’s constantly hunting for, and dreaming about, new materials. Her work for Mosquito Control takes her from key to key.
Red heaven This pine needle basket has a seaside mahoe center, a black triple trail going up one side and a butterfly Tenerife over one side. This basket is 8.5 inches “You never know what you might find; sometimes it’s just a bit of driftwood,” she said. “But basket making is ‘zen’ for me.” Her creations cost from $20 to $300 each and are available at Art@830, plus art shows such as the one at Sugarloaf School on Dec. 2 and the Art Under the Oaks in the Upper Keys on Jan. 13. For more examples of her work, see her Facebook page, “Big Pine Needle Baskets” to learn more.
Butterfly over the top This beautiful one of a kind pine needle basket has an acrylic pour on wood center with a tree of life on the side and above the bowl. The total size of this piece is 9” x 8” including the tree of life Basket is an understatement. The easiest way to describe Yvonne Wielhouwer’s work is to call it art. She has one example that incorporates a magnificent horse conch that is suitable as a centerpiece for an important occasion — Christmas dinner, for example. “Yvonne is one of the most talented artists that we feature in the gallery,” said Christine Scarsella of Art@830 in Key West. “Her work is organic, clean, fresh and precise.”

Their love of the water and marine life lured Kim and her late husband Ian to the Florida Keys in the mid 1990s. Initially, they came annually for a combination of business and pleasure and later decided to become permanent residents. Kim now lives on Cudjoe Key. Born in Biloxi, Mississippi, Kim was the daughter of a marine conservationist. As a child, she spent her summers exploring the barrier islands on the Gulf of Mexico and later moved to the coast of South America. Kim is a self-taught artist, and experiences from her childhood greatly influenced her artistic expression. Starting at an early age she received several awards for her work. Using oil and acrylic paint, Kim created numerous commissioned pieces for businesses, individuals and charities. Ian, Kim’s late husband, introduced her to watercolor and the art of Gyotaku resulting in a combination of their names, KIMIAN.
Gyotaku is (Japanese for fish rubbing). Gyotaku originated in Japan, where fishermen initially used the technique to document the size of their catch. Kim uses a conservation printing technique where all edible fish are eaten and bait becomes bait again. Using black ink or acrylic paint which is brushed on to an actual fish, Kim then prints the fish onto handmade paper or canvas, and employs her own technique in coloring the fish rubbing. Kim is a member of the Nature Printing Society and this past year traveled to South East Asia and studied with master printer Mineo Yamamota in Japan and taught a class on Gyotaku in Singapore. Kim completes her work with a custom made frame. Recently Kim received first place in mixed media in a juried show and the Peoples Choice Award at Artists in Paradise Gallery in Big Pine Key. Some of her more unique rubbings have come from travel abroad including the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Red Seas. Her art graces the walls of homes and businesses nationally and internationally. When not residing in the Florida Keys Kim spends time at her second home in the Spanish Virgin Islands creating more art. In the Florida Keys, her work may be viewed at Artists in Paradise Gallery and Out of the Blue Gallery on Big Pine Key, The Key West Art Center in Key West, Little Palm Island , Little Torch and Artamorada Gallery, Islamorada. A recent piece commissioned by Art in Public Places may be viewed at the new Key West Airport terminal.

Clyde in Key West is happy to showcase Artist Derek Deyoung with their painting titled "Bluewater Dream". I’ve been creating art since I was just a child. I always knew that I wanted to be an artist but it wasn’t until my college years at Kendall College of Art and Design that I began to understand that I wanted to bring something fresh to the world of art. The environment and our waterways are such an important and critical part of our world. A lake or ocean without fish has very little interest to humans. To preserve these habitats for generations to come and to enjoy fishing the way my great grandfather did, is an incredibly important mission and one which my artwork can help to achieve. My approach to pubic art is to bring people’s love and interest to these beautiful creatures and help them understand that they are an important part of their world, one which they would fight to protect.
This Artist in Paradise has this painting titled "HAVANA TO KEY WEST" and more of Key West artist Derek Deyoung. Strange how you can become what you do, but that seems to be the case here. It has been a good thing for the most part, but with it comes with some suffering too. I’m tortured by my paintings that don’t go well. I toss and turn in my sleep when things aren’t going well in the studio. On the other hand, the satisfaction I get from finishing a great painting is immeasurable. It keeps me working hard, striving to grow as an artist. Many people are surprised by the success I’ve had so far running DeYoung Studio, as it is a struggle for most artists to create artwork and run a good business. My secret is the people around me. I find supportive people in every direction, and they step up to help me in the ways I need help most. My wife deserves most of the credit for giving me the drive to work hard and to build a future for us. Without her encouragement, I would probably be satisfied having a few paintings hung up at a local coffee shop, and spend the majority of my time chasing Trout and Steelies.
This sculpture called "Yellowfin Tuna" was done by our own Key West Artist Derek Deyoung. During my four years in art school, it seemed apparent that they might want the student body to be prepared for failure. The professors would refer to the one or two that might make it as an artist in the real world. They described the jobs out in that real world as few and far between with all the artists competing for it and willing to do it for very little money. It seemed like they might be prodding us to consider a plan B.“A couple nights later I made a phone call to my Dad. I told him that I was reconsidering my degree. What he said that day I still consider to be one of the most important conversations in my life. He told me “You’ve known that you were going to be an artist since you were a little kid, Derek, this is all you’ve ever wanted. Now is the time to take a chance on making that dream come true. You’ve got your whole life to take whatever job you need to and take care of all your responsibilities. But now, while you’re young, is when you have got to go for the gusto! You have to go after your dreams and do your best to make it. If you don’t try now you will always wonder what if for the rest of your life.”
This peice of Art titled "Sailfish Brook Trout Mount" was created by artist Derek Deyoung. After a few years of spending my summer weekends doing local juried art shows, I started branching out a bit and did the Midwest Fly Fishing Show in Warren, near Detroit, Michigan. Although it was very expensive for us to do at the time, it was far and away the best show that I’d done. I started to understand that my main clients were in the fly fishing world. The next big show was the retailer show in Denver, Colorado and I decided to put every penny into getting there and making it happen. Even though my booth was the most rag tag one there, the show was a complete success! I had people coming in and out of my booth all day long for the three days of the show. Magazine publishers, owners of famous fly fishing companies, and other top level executives. People seemed genuinely interested in my unique way of portraying fish and fly fishing. My work was voted “Best of What’s New in Fly Fishing”. I walked away from that show feeling more confident than I ever had.”
Derek Deyoung

My work has veered off from the traditional fish illustration style. I place more importance on using a unique style and palette rather than painting a fish to look photo-realistic.

Clyde in Key West is happy to showcase Artist Geoffrey Smith with their painting titled "Nesting Great Blue Heron Original Oil Painting". Geoffrey C. Smith is an American wildlife sculptor, painter, and photographer. Geoffrey grew up in California and graduated from Montana State University. He currently resides in the coastal town of Stuart, Florida, and summers in Soldotna, Alaska. His best-known work is that of The Stuart Sailfish. The 18-foot monument situated in downtown Stuart serves as the iconic symbol of the city and Rise Above Lotus that was gifted to Pope Francis by the President of the United States during a gift exchange. Often compared to John James Audubon for the size and scope of his collection. Geoffrey has been characterized as a representational sculptor, although stylistically he may be viewed as a naturalist. His signature artistic style can be deemed “loose”, wherein the subjects of his work are represented by basic elements such as fingerprints suggesting feathers or fur. All of his bronzes are crafted into masterpieces by investment casting using the ancient lost-wax casting process, whereby an original sculpture is made of clay. After that, a mold is made from the original from which the foundry creates an enduring bronze sculpture. Geoffrey prefers smaller, limited editions. He proofs each work personally before they are signed and numbered. Geoffrey uses a traditional patina finishing process on many of his bronze sculptures, choosing to represent the animal as nature has seen fit to create it but in more recent years his sculptures have become more contemporary as his art has evolved, sometimes using stainless steel with mirror finish, smooth textured bronze, and brightly colored patinas to express this evolution.
This Artist in Paradise has this painting titled "Moonlight Dinghy Original Oil Painting by 48"L x 36"H" and more of Key West artist Geoffrey Smith. After early success as a duck decoy carver, Geoffrey began casting bronzes from clay in 1984. His upbringing on the northern California coast and later experiences in the wilds of Montana instilled a love of nature and a talent for patient observation of wildlife in its habitat. Since moving to Florida in 1996 with his family, he has spent a lot of time amongst the abundant wildlife that inspires his works. In his later years, he summers in South-Central Alaska. He frequently returns to Colorado to collaborate with his foundry. As their primary artist, Smith can work hands-on at the foundry to ensure the highest consistency and quality for his sculptures.
This Sculpture called "Sailfish Jumping Out of the Water, Limited Edition Bronze Sculpture 10"L x 10.5"w x 27"H was done by our own Key West Artist Geoffrey Smith. Geoffrey has been honored with commissions from the state of Montana and many private and corporate collections. His diverse artistic skill ranges from creating smaller pieces to capture a favorite animal’s detailed characteristics to producing larger-than-life monumental works. He has been nominated to the Florida Artists Hall of Fame three times. His bronze sculptures are in the Permanent Collection at The Vatican, President George Bush Presidental Libary, The Governor of the State of Florida Art Collection, Vice-President Dan Quayle, state officials, the James Museum, And Presented to foreign dignitaries by the US Department of State. He is a member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists. In addition to having two Signature Galleries, Geoffrey is represented by fine art galleries throughout the United States. He regularly exhibits at fine art shows, including the Annual Society of Animal Artists exhibition where he received The Merit Award for his Modern Pelican sculpture. He was designated the official Sculptor for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Foundation of Florida.
This peice Art titled "White Marlin in Wave Limited Edition Bronze Sculpture of a Marlin in a Wave of Fish" 19.25"L x 8.5"W x 14.5"H was created by artist Geoffrey Smith. Geoffrey is primarily a sculptor, and his paintings follow suit. He mixes fine wax and oil paint, then uses a palette knife to sculpt the painting, giving his work a distinctive deeply dimensional feeling displaying large strokes and layers of texture. Geoffrey is a Conservationist and lover of nature. Much of his time, talent, and treasure goes toward supporting charities that foster his ideals. In 2023 he Created the Art Of Nature Foundation to leverage his voice and Art to act as a bridge between conservation and wildlife. He is a wonderful, internationally recognized Artist whose paintings and sculptures are beautiful, and aim to make a difference in the world.

In the winter of 2022 she opened a solo exhibition at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma and began work on the third in a trilogy of artist books while artist-in-residence at Amazon’s headquarters in spring 2023. The following fall she worked with the Open AIR program in Montana as the first artist-in-residence at the Missoula Butterfly House and a fellowship from the McMillen Foundation helped to fund a residency on Vashon Island this past summer. In addition, she currently teaches studio art and art history at The Evergreen State College. Collaborations with a number of different artists in her close-knit community have been vital to the development of her work and she looks forward to future opportunities to expand that practice. Lauren is also a marathon open water swimmer and with her immediate family close by, she loves to call Seattle home.
This painting called "Prodigal Summer oil on canvas20" x 24" 2024 was done by our own Key West Artist Lauren Boilini. In my current body of work I look at the idea of excess, when images of excess become meaningless and fall into the realm of pattern. This idea of gluttony is reflected in our current culture. We are a hedonistic society, always looking for more until the more we are looking for loses its meaning. Research, reading and exploration are vital to my studio practice, consistently driving my work forward. I continuously seek and study epic narratives, creating my own for each work. I am fascinated with crowds of people converging in one space at one time. This includes religious practices, festivals, political gatherings, orgies, feeding frenzies, stampedes, riots, migrations, etc. Recently I have been drawn to images of battles and duels; I am interested in what drives us to violence and destruction of life.
This peice of Art titled "to be (without you)oil on linen25" x 30" 2023 was created by artist Lauren Boilini. My studio practice has consistently been painting, often extending into the realm of installation. Though I traditionally work on a large scale, in 2016 I was awarded a grant to create a small book of drawings loosely based around the structure of a graphic novel, to which I recently finished the sequel. I built the book sequentially, telling the story behind paintings I have been working on for the past ten years. It consists of small drawings that investigate my thoughts on sport and war, and their shared violence. Image-based, the story takes place on a fictional island in which only male members of different species have survived and explores the destruction that follows. In this second book, the human men have died off, and their animal counterparts have been left to take over the island and fight for power. The development of this narrative has guided the content of new work, moving me back and forth between large and small, and leading me into a third in the series of artist books.

"Dancer Ivy" Stainless steel sculpture of a female Dancer Wall mounted 44" x 12" x 69"h. Key West Artists Rainer Lagemann sculpture titled "Dancer Ivy" is available at this Art Gallery and a few others in Key West.Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, on September 14th, 1959, I began my career as an artist in the fall of 2005 when an exploratory foray into welding, during my years in California's Bay Area, quickly became an obsession and yielded my early works. Once I found my medium, I started to express what I had learned in schools, museums, travels, through people and in my dreams. Armed with a degree in Interior Architecture from FH Detmold and inspired by my new passion, I decided to portray the human body in a modern interpretation of the classic art of sculpture.
"Dancer Ashley" Stainless steel sculpture of a female dancer Wall mounted 38" x 12" x 67"h. Artists has this sculpture titled "Dancer AL" and more of Key West artist Rainer Lagemann. My pieces invite viewers to contemplate the human body in motion and its universal capacity for self-expression. The stainless steel squares used to sculpt the figures, coupled with the hollow framework of the forms, represent the intellectual ability, emotional range, physical strength and spiritual dimension of each individual. The shadows these sculptures cast on the floors or walls of the spaces they inhabit imbue each piece with a secondary layer of beauty, abstraction, and mystery. Highly customizable in their ability to adopt different colors, spaces and climates, the sculptures enable those who collect them to satisfy their own need for self-expression.
"Standing Ground" Stainless steel sculpture of a standing male Free standing 22" x 12" x 62"h. This sculpture called "Standing Ground" was done by our own Key West Artists Rainer Lagemann. My sculptures have been exhibited worldwide at various art galleries, art fairs, art centers, museums, hotels and even churches. I have also worked closely with curators and public institutions on commissioned work spurred by the belief that public art adds value to spaces and allows me to contribute to cities and institutions that support arts and culture.

ELEGY Series of 30 4.25" x 5.5" | framed 6.25" x 7.5" handmade paper (bed linens), handmade pigment (bone) 2020 Death appears black and white, so very certain. But it is full of contradiction; it is sorrowful and light, visceral and beautiful, extraordinary and mundane. Bones — powerful symbols of the physicality of life and death — embody these opposite states: when galvanized by fire, they have the strange and beautiful ability to produce both black and white pigment. For this series, sun-bleached animal bones were cleaned and dried, while others were charred in the coals of an open fire, and ground by hand into pigment. Worn cotton bed linens (our place of birth, dreaming and dying) were shredded, reduced to pulp, and made into paper. This peice of Key West Art titled ELEGY was created by Artists in Paradise Gallery Victoria Mata.

Stone Tides | porcelain, brass nails, mixed media on panel | 5" x 7" | 2022 Her recent series are minimalist and meditative in tone, with an emphasis on natural materials, textures and processes. Shades of black and white combine to explore the appearance of opposites and the unifying balance between opposing states. Elements that hold symbolic and personal value (notably clay, bone, rust, wood and cotton) come together in varied forms to speak to themes of loss, transformation and impermanence. Works often build in series and multiples, observing the complexity of relationship and the fragmenting of experience.

Key West Artists Vivien Segel available on her website at this Art Gallery and a few others in Key West. I am originally from Brazil and I have been living in Key West, since 1989. Due to my fascination with tools and woodworking, I create assemblages and collages using old and odd objects and also wood or parts from damaged antique furniture pieces. I also create abstract paintings and landscapes. My art pieces reconfiguration and refining process many times ends up showing complete changes from the original concept. This constant evolution is evidence of my desire to always test, stretch and expand my abilities. To me, personal and professional life challenges have always been tools for self-improvement and my search is constant and endless.
This Artists in Paradise has this piece titled "Risoluto 9.75 x 9.75 x 4 inches" and more from Key West artist Vivien Segel. In 2006 I ventured into the world of mixed media, creating collages and assemblages using mostly found materials and obsolete pieces. For the assemblages I either use antique boxes or I build my own out of recycled wood if I need a specific size. I also use my carpentry skills to create or adjust the wooden parts that are introduced to some pieces. This fits in with my longstanding fascination with woodworking!
This piece is called Encore "9.75 x 9.75 x 7 inches" was done by our own Key West Artists Vivien Segel. The inspiration for my paintings and some mixed media pieces comes from different sources, such as crumbling walls, rusted materials, the blurry background of an image, and many others. The results in the paintings may be abstract compositions or reminiscences of abstract landscapes. In my mixed media pieces old and odd objects are brought back to life, as if they had their own memories put back together into a new reality.
This peice of Key West Art titled Allegretto "3.5 x 8.5 x 5 inches" was created by Artists Vivien Segel. Some time ago, on my way home from work, I saw a very old upright piano on the street, to be disposed of and taken by our local trash removal company. What I felt when I approached it, was a cry for help and survival... The exterior was extremely damaged, probably by water and humidity or affected by the rain from the hurricanes that reached and devastated the homes in our islands so many times... I went home and came back with all tools I could carry and with my husband's help, I started to disassemble it

Inspired initially by a desire to craft pots for her plants, Ellie Petzinger embraced the art of wheel throwing, creating pieces that combine beauty, versatility and a love of organic materials. Ellie's work, particularly her beloved handmade mugs, feature wheel-thrown clay techniques, hand-pulled handles and carefully stamped Key West lettering. The Key West mugs, adorned with gorgeous glaze combinations and intricate designs, have become a highlight in the gallery. Her work is inspired by her experience as a marine biologist in the Florida Keys and her love for the outdoors, drawing from the raw, earthy materials that she molds into versatile and organic designs. The Key West Art & Historical Society is pleased to announce the opening of its forthcoming exhibition 'Collecting Key West: The Works of Mario Sanchez.' The Society welcomes the public to a special reception on December 6 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Key West Museum of Art & History, 281 Front Street, to mark the exhibit opening. Mario Sanchez (1908-2005), a Key West native, is among this country’s finest and most-recognized folk artists. In hundreds of intricately painted wood carvings created in a lifelong labor of love, Sanchez has provided a better history of Key West in the first part of the 20th century than any annals or academic texts.
His bas-relief carvings, or intaglios, are a visual feast filled with the music, smells and passion of Gato’s Village, the Cuban-American community of Key West where Sanchez spent much of his life. In the carvings, each person, chicken, dog and fish has its own singular expression, attitude and identity. Each represents an actual part of Sanchez’s personal experience. The self-taught artist was born in Key West in 1908, the grandson of Cuban immigrants. As a child, Sanchez enjoyed carving, and as young man began carving fish out of pieces of driftwood, which he sold for $1.50. In the 1940s, at the urging of his mother-in-law, he began creating more complicated scenes depicting life in Key West as he remembered them from his childhood.
During his more than 70-year career, Sanchez developed his own style while mastering more traditional skills such as bas-relief carving and perspective. Working in cedar wood and white pine, the artist first sketched the scene onto a paper bag, and then used carbon paper to transfer the image to the wooden canvas. He then whittled the wood to create a low bas-relief, leaving the original sketch behind. Materials such as house paint, clean kitty litter (to provide texture for the streets), and egg yolks and Elmer’s glue (to make the windows shiny) were applied to the carved wood, bringing his artwork to life.
Sanchez’s first major public showing was in 1961 at the Fort East Martello Museum. This exhibition served to enrich his reputation as a well-respected artist and member of the Key West Cuban-American community
