Key West artist Tamera Foster stained glass titled Old Man Under the Sea is available at this Art Gallery and a few others in Key West.
I moved to the Keys in 2016 – prior to that I lived in multiple parts of Florida including Miami and Fort Lauderdale as a young person – I graduated from Tarpon Springs High School on the West Coast. Attended Broward Community College and Later University of South Florida (Tampa) where I received my master’s degree. I also lived in Tampa, Jacksonville and Middleburg FL throughout my adult life until I moved here in 2016- In between all of that I lived briefly – a few years in Michigan – Mt Morris just outside of Flint and in Flint MI (as a teenager). I was born in Virginia but was an infant when I left there so that’s just a birthplace.

I began doing stained glass art in Fort Lauderdale while attending Broward Community College. So back in the 80” s. But then life, school, raising children etc. began and stained glass went on the back burner until I moved to the Keys. My mother, who passed away in 2016 had a large collection of glass and equipment for stained glass as she had taken up the art and did stained glass for sale for about 15 years before her passing. She did quite well with it and did a little bit of glass etching as well.

So I am back into the art of stained glass utilizing much of her collection of glass. But “oh my goodness” has the cost of finding new glass gone up in price over the years- BUT hasn’t everything.

I get most of my inspiration from the ocean and abstract art. Occasionally I will create a flower or birds as well. But the tropical stuff seems to be the most fun. Its so colorful.

I still work full time in the school system, so I create mostly on the weekends.

I am open to discussing with anyone a custom piece and we can figure out the cost and how long it would take to make etc. That’s how my mother did her glass business, mostly custom pieces to a person’s wishes and dimensions.

"Dancer Ivy" Stainless steel sculpture of a female Dancer Wall mounted 44" x 12" x 69"h. Key West Artists Rainer Lagemann sculpture titled "Dancer Ivy" is available at this Art Gallery and a few others in Key West.Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, on September 14th, 1959, I began
my career as an artist in the fall of 2005 when an exploratory foray into welding, during my years in California's Bay Area, quickly became an obsession and yielded my early works. Once I found my medium, I started to express what I had learned in schools, museums, travels, through people and in my dreams. Armed with a degree in Interior Architecture from FH Detmold and inspired by my new passion, I decided to portray the human body in a modern interpretation of the classic art of sculpture.

"Dancer Ashley" Stainless steel sculpture of a female dancer Wall mounted 38" x 12" x 67"h. Artists has this sculpture titled "Dancer AL" and more of Key West artist Rainer Lagemann. My pieces invite viewers to contemplate the human body in motion and its universal capacity for self-expression. The stainless steel squares used to sculpt the figures, coupled with the hollow framework of the forms, represent the intellectual ability, emotional range, physical strength and spiritual dimension of each individual. The shadows these sculptures cast on the floors or walls of the spaces they inhabit imbue each piece with a secondary layer of beauty, abstraction, and mystery. Highly customizable in their ability to adopt different colors, spaces and climates, the sculptures enable those who collect them to satisfy their own need for self-expression.

This peice of Key West Art titled Dancing Totem 12" x 12" was created by artist Marlene Koenig. When Spirit calls I pack my bags and leave my island. India, Nepal, the Mediterranean or South America. I am endlessly fascinated by how the people of this world animate and decorate themselves and the way these things play out in how we live and celebrate our every day lives
I am free
And so I layer the spiritual and the decorative threw out all my work. It is my hope that the viewer of my art or the student in my classes takes away something to enhance their own journey and make a little more beautiful the path they have chosen and the world we live in
We are all divine

Q & A with Fran Decker, leader of the Harry S. Truman Foundation’s August 10 “TRU-ly Amazing Art” series Paint & Sip event
7/5/20240 Comments

Fran Decker is a long time Key West-based artist acclaimed for her vivid and widely collected paintings of local landmarks, conch houses, marine themes, island critters and flora. On Saturday, August 10, from 10:00am – 1:00pm, she will lead a “Paint & Sip” event on the grounds of the Harry S. Truman Little White House, 111 Front Street, Key West Florida. We caught up with the artist in advance of the event for some Q and A about her and her work:

Q: When/how did your interest in art first emerge/manifest, and when/how did you realize you had a talent for it?
FD: My mother loved painting and other craft endeavors so there were always art supplies around the house when I was growing up and she encouraged anything creative. I painted my first “good” painting at age 12.

Q: When and how did you sell your first painting (or when/how did you go pro)?
FD: I was taking an art class at the Audubon House with Judi Bradford and she encouraged me to try selling my art so I joined Island Arts Co-op.

Q: Was there any particular painting skill you found particularly challenging to master and how did you meet that challenge?
FD: I am good at color and composition but not drawing. I’ve learned some great “secrets” from artist and Cocco & Salem Gallery co-owner Jim Salem. I’ve been a regular at his Thursday classes for 20 years.
