Those are real spiders in the movie, but obviously they were harmless & non lethal. The general/big boss spider however can have a nasty bite, but they were all handled by a entomologist. In some scenes the big spider was animatronic & was handled by Jamie Hyneman from MythBusters. Great cast, but the one who steals the show is John Goodman, who plays this weirdo, but awesome, bug exterminator who really takes his job seriously, it's definitely a role meant for a character actor known for playing eccentric, crazy characters.
