This black-tailed skimmer allowed me to get close enough to take these pics with my phone! Cracking little beasties. #wildlife #odonata #dragonflies #LakenheathFen
Lakenheath Fen this afternoon. I had a brief Bittern fly-by, but it was too quick to photograph. #LakenheathFen

A male bearded tit with prominent dark moustache - sitting atop a reed seed head
Taken a couple of years ago at #LakenheathFen @rspb.bsky.social @rspbengland.bsky.social the glorious Bearded Tit eating from the seed heads in late winter #brids 🪶
>10 Marsh Harriers eventually settled to roost at #LakenheathFen on this perfectly still, clear winter's evening - watched by a ♂️ Merlin. Lapwings also took their time, after Cormorants, Corvids, Greylags & Great White Egret had gone to roost. #BirdTwitter #BirdsSeenIn2023

Some flecks of snow in #LakenheathFen hinterland were actually flocks of Whooper Swans, incl. a pair of Bewicks' to the N. Shelducks tried to feed in vain on the frozen washes. Still open water for the swans to roost in middle Joist Fen. Pair Grey Partridge to S. #BirdsSeenIn2021
At least 2 Great White Egrets stalked the edge of the #LittleOuse where Teal hugged the bank.
A rather lost, hungry looking Lapwing landed near me on the flood bank.
Tufted Duck & a pair of Whooper Swans flew by.

Typical of @RSPBLakenheath that I should find the largest Giant Puffball I've ever seen.
The washes are frozen over now, the waterbirds packed onto the River #LittleOuse. Plenty of Teal, Wigeon & Coot.
Nothing beats the drama of a fenland sky.

At @RSPBLakenheath this evening, here is one of a flock of c20 Snipe (new for #BirdsSeenIn2021.)
As soon as the sun slipped down to the horizon, a bitter cold descended. I fear for the animals out there tonight, with -11°C forecast.

The @RSPBLakenheath Fen #DartmoorPonies rested in the winter sun, taking a break from their grazing job.
The Roe Deer were also very relaxed. Phenomenal numbers of Muntjac.

The River #LittleOuse was brimming, the washes awash with the pulse and whistle of Teal and Wigeon, and scritch of Snipe as a Curlew flew over.
A Grey Heron was displeased with the presence of a Great White Egret on its territory.

Again @RSPBLakenheath Fen a treasure trove of raptors: Marsh Harriers galore, Goshawk (I think, both new for #BirdsSeenIn2021), Merlin, Kestrel, Buzzard & a Barn Owl as evening fell.
