An earlier experiment with a related, but different recipe. The photo shows a wooden spit over a metal firepit with glowing embers. To the left, another spit with chickens rests closer to the heat source. Dough has been wrapped irregularly around the central section of the strip and secured loosely with string which is cutting into the surface as it rises. The outside is already browned. 
This recipe (linked in the blog post) is from a less reliable source and unlike today's does not specify the degree of heat. That is why I used a low heat to give it time to rise and soak up the melted butter it was supposed to be served with. This may be a misunderstanding by the nineteenth-century editor.

Today, I found a long and detailed recipe for cooking a cake on a spit over the fire. It's not #Baumkuchen and not quite #langosz, but definitely related.
