Portland After Dark. A project I’ve been working on - exploring the neon signs of Portland. #portland #portlandafterdark #neon #portlandneon #portlandneonaigns #whitestag #tiptopcleaners #hollywoodtheater #laurelhursttheater
Repurposed free newsletter/newspaper dispenser boxes that have been turned into a street art project. Some form of these existed for at least the better part of a decade in the 2010s~, on NE 28th ave, next to the Laurelhurst theater, in Portland, OR. They were not always the same dispensers, but they would evolve overtime until they got removed, and then new ones would show up (or new dispensers would get converted as replacement). I believe this is the last iteration of them before permanent removal. A previous and longstanding iteration of this involved covering a newsletter dispenser and adjacent telephone pole in a heave amount of can dispensed insulating foam, giving it a vaguely organic/brain-like appearance. That foam was then spray-painted in wild colors.I don’t know when they finally went away completely, but sometime in the last several years. More details about each piece in their photo’s alt text. Artists unknown. Taken on February 11th, 2018.
This street art piece was formerly a real estate listing dispenser, as evidenced by the house roof like structure along the top of the box. The interior has been entirely removed and has what appears to be rusted car tire snow chains draped over it. It has a slot cut in the roof, similar to a suggestion box, and at one point offered a way to drop notes inside, though I have long since forgotten the silly nature of their writing prompt. At the time of this photo, the entire has been entirely removed and it was mostly an abandoned part of the project. Artist(s) unknown. This street art project was a repurposed free newsletter/newspaper dispenser, with a door you could open to retrieve the contents. It is now covered in a heavy amount of decorations consisting of countless clear eyeglasses frames without lenses (glued in a huge pile on top, and with others attached to the sides), stick-on gel hearts and flowers, and on the door, a small circular mirror and miniature game of tic tac toe that can be played by spinning plastic tiles around. Along the top of the box is written “Dream Machine”. With great apologies, I cannot remember what was inside the box, and I stupidly did not take any pictures. But I seem to recall that either inside of this one or the other, was a Barbie or Ken doll. Sadly that is among the extent of my memories. Artist(s) unknown. This #StreetArt project next to the #LaurelhurstTheater evolved for years, this was one of the last iterations before it got removed. I regret not taking any photos of inside the Dream Machine. Artist(s) unknown. Additional details in photo alt text. Photos from February 11th, 2018, #PortlandOR #pdx
