Finished replacing our back lawn with natives! Last step was the addition of 8 soapberry/russet buffaloberry (Shepherdia canadensis) plants, positioned to shade overexposed salal (Gaultheria shalon) in PM. (Deer have ignored soapberry on our back slope.) Pics today.

Update #3. We've been hand-digging grass sod around wood strawberries and native shrubs planted last fall. This time of year if you can't help pulling a strawberry, you can replace it in soil, keep moist for a few days, and it will quickly reestablish. Lots of worms! #lawnreplacement 🌱 #nativeplants

Update #2 on getting rid of our unhappy back lawn the worm-friendly way. Today I added 4 salal, 2 tall Oregon grape, and 2 red flowering currants. Second photo shows wood strawberries starting to dominate grass in some areas. 🤞
