Peter, the suffragettes chained themselves to railings; Palestine Action chains an entire community to fear. If Labour calls that terrorism, it isn't besmirching Pankhurst's legacy-it's defending the very pluralism those women fought to enter. The only thing your tweet normalises is moral myopia.
Carry on romanticising vandalism, if you must.

At the same time, the willful blindness does not inspire much sympathy:
"Roughly 30 miles northwest of Denver, Boulder thrived as a center of counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s as students at the University of Colorado staged anti-Vietnam protests and flocked to Grateful Dead shows.
"The city of 105,000 residents has maintained its easygoing reputation. Its pedestrian-friendly downtown has rainbow crosswalks, shops offering psychic readings, crystals and hiking sandals, and a view of the city's iconic crimson rock formations, known as the Flatirons."
In fact, it is not at all surprising that rainbow crosswalks and crystals and calls to address climate change and racial essentialism provide the backdrop for violent anti-Semitism. That's not because rainbows hate Jews or crystals are threatened by Jewish space lasers. It's because all these, taken together, paint the picture of a self-consciously progressive environment.
And a self-consciously progressive environment does not behave nicely toward the Jews who wander through its enchanted hinterlands.
It is true that once upon a time Jews were not considered the exception to the broader left-wing political coalition. But that was because, believe it or not, even the "hippie" left (as the Times would put it) was a coalition. Today the progressive movement is not so much a coalition as a single-file line that wraps around the block several times.

As one resident told the Times: "The city is behind on road work. They're behind on infrastructure. We have a huge problem with homelessness. You can't even take your kids to the public library anymore because of all the homeless around there. Those issues affect everybody."
There is only one issue for the good progressive right now: the evils of the Jewish state. You want clean drinking water? Gazans don't have clean drinking water, why should you? You want a crosswalk closer to the school? How many crosswalks have you seen in Khan Younis lately? Garbage pickup twice a week— when Rafah doesn't even have it once?
All of this was foreseeable. But it was most foreseeable for the people who decided that their city government had to work remotely to try to slow down their city's Hamasification, but said nothing until Jews were set aflame in the public square.

The UK's PM Keir Starmer and its FM David Lammy made petulant statements about the incident in support of their awful Labour colleagues.
Again, all of this is being done not for the purposes of advancing a diplomatic settlement but to search beneath the couch cushions for any Hamas propaganda they might have missed.
Hamas propaganda is a drug to them, and their behavior is that of addicts who have yet to hit rock bottom but are working hard to get there. As everyone knows, the first step toward recovery is admitting the problem. So, yes, call them Hamas propagandists.
For everyone's sake, don't sugarcoat the problem.

The woke left never tires of highlighting slights against blacks and other favored minority groups. The relative blindness of progressives to antisemitism, however, especially when it emanates from nonwhites, undermines their moral credibility. Discrimination based on race or religion is wrong and shouldn’t be tolerated, regardless of who is on the receiving end. A previous generation of liberal activists understood this, which is one reason the civil-rights movement was so effective. America has never been as culturally diverse as it is today, and a common morality has never been more important.

In other words—and this is the key point in understanding the escalation—these students at Columbia University and other expensive universities have been the most pampered young adults in the history of the universe. Though of course there will be individual exceptions, as a group these folks have been handed more and asked to do less than anyone who walked the earth before them.

The students themselves unintentionally acknowledged this generality last night. After they left their occupation, many of them made a circle outside and cultishly chanted a bunch of slogans, including: “We have nothing to lose but our chains.”

I don’t know how people who have actually been kept in chains would feel about this kind of appropriation by the ultra-privileged, but it tells us something important about the mindset of the comfortable elite: They find themselves and their lives utterly boring.

These activists’ anger at previous generations isn’t for withholding opportunity, it’s for the opportunity itself. There are two kinds of Columbia students who talk unironically about losing their chains: those who know they are privileged and pretend otherwise as a form of escapism, and those who actually think being told to go to class at their expensive private institution is what everybody in history has meant by “chains.”
