#HappyBirthday Richard Attwood, 86. He started 16 #F1 GPs, driving BRMs, Lotuses, Coopers & Brabhams, best result 2nd for BRM at Monaco in ’68 (pic), where he also took fastest lap. Oh & he won the #LeMans24Hours in ’70 in a Porsche 917, Porsche’s first ever Le Mans triumph.

In ’60 he was 6th in the #Sebring12Hours in a Ferrari 250GT, then he crashed it in practice for that year’s #LeMans24Hours. Assumed dead, he was nonetheless taken to hospital, stayed for 8 months, & eventually made a full recovery. Pic: leading Chris Bristow, Aintree, ’59. (2/2)

Remembering John Colum Crichton-Stuart, 7th Marquess of Bute, aka Johnny Dumfries in his racing days, who drove 15 #F1 GPs for Lotus in ’86 & won the #LeMans24Hours for Jaguar in ’88. He died of cancer #OnThisDay 5 years ago, aged 62. Pic: Lotus 98T (’86).

#HappyBirthday Vern Schuppan, 83. Schuppan was a sports car ace - he won the #LeMans24Hours for Porsche in ’83 - but he had a less than stellar #F1 career, starting 9 F1 GPs for BRM, Ensign, Hill & Surtees. Pic: en route to 9th, Road Atlanta #CanAm, ’78, Elfin-Chevy MR8A-C.

Remembering Hans Herrmann, born #OnThisDay in ’28. He drove 18 GPs between ’53 & ’69, bagging one podium, but he was more successful in sports cars, driving the glorious new Porsche 917 to #LeMans24Hours victory in ’70, the marque’s first outright win there; 18 more would follow.

#HappyBirthday Alex Wurz, 52. Pics: Montreal 2007 (a good day: 3rd for Williams) & Le Mans 2009 (a fab day: 1st for Peugeot), his 2nd outright #LeMans24Hours victory, for he also won in a Porsche in ’96, at 22, which - #AnorakFact - makes him the youngest outright Le Mans winner.

Remembering Olivier Gendebien, born #OnThisDay in 1924, one of the greatest sports car racers of all time. He won the #LeMans24Hours x4, #TargaFlorio x3, #Sebring12Hours x3, #Reims12Hours x2 & #Nürburgring1000km x1. He also bagged 2 #F1 podiums. Great portrait by John Ross.

#HappyBirthday Bertrand Gachot, 63. He entered 84 #F1 GPs for Onyx, Rial, Coloni, Lola, Larrousse, Pacific & Jordan, whose 191 (pic) remains one of the prettiest F1 cars of the past 40 years. Gachot’s career highlight was winning the #LeMans24Hours for Mazda in ’91.

Prior to becoming a Ferrari dealer Luigi Chinetti had been an Alfa Romeo, Talbot & Ferrari racer. He won the #LeMans24Hours 3 times (’32, ’34 & ’49 [pic; Ferrari 166MM]) & the #Spa24Hours twice (’33 & ’49). He died in Greenwich, Connecticut, in ’94, aged 93. (2/2)
