The Tallest Wave in History: Lituya Bay’s Mega-Tsunami In 1958, a mountainside collapsed into Alaska’s Lituya Bay, unleashing the tallest wave ever recorded on Earth — a 524-meter (1,720 ft) wall of water. This mega-tsunami defied everything we thought we knew about natural disasters. Here's the full story of the wave that erased a mountainside, hurled boats like toys, and warned us that it could all happen again.

📍Lituya Bay, Alaska. 1958.
A mountain fell into the sea.
What rose was the tallest wave in human history: 524 meters (1,720 feet).
This wasn't fiction.

A text conversation.
Friend: if the girl that went missing in the Dominican Republic died by a rogue wave I’m going to lose my ever loving shit. Mostly because that thought would never have crossed my mind until SOMEONE put it there (tongue-sticking out emoji)
Vee: Hahah if it was on the shore, it’d have had to be one hell of a sudden wave that didn’t touch any of the rest of the coast.
But in the beach is too close these days.
I just don’t mess with the ocean. It’s none of my business what goes on under there.

friend: Oh thank god you have logicked that out of my mind. I can't believe it only took 3 days for me to start envisioning rogue wave scenarios. Haha
Vee: I didn’t foresee the trauma you might have working with your field now (laughing face emoji) remember: an 18-inch wave can topple a wall built to withstand 125MPH winds (a stat I will never get out of my head we are so glad we live at the top of a hill)
Friend: I'll be promptly terminating all contracts in coastal communities haaaa

So my friend is a water resource engineer. I did a PowerPoint on rogue waves during Cozy Girls Weekend. I just got these texts. Sorry not sorry.
Does the idea of 1400ft waves fill your body with terror? Have I got a nightmare story for you to research…

Antique map of Lituya Bay in Alaska

Of all the #antique #maps I own (few dozen?), this one is my favourite. It's La Perouse's 1786 map of #LituyaBay, AK, which even then was known as a treacherous place. But it wasn't until 1958 that it became famous, when a giant #landslide triggered the largest #tsunami ever recorded on Earth. 🧪⚒️
