Even now this landscape is assembling.
The hills darken. The oxen
sleep in their blue yoke,
the fields having been
picked clean, the sheaves
bound evenly and piled at the roadside
among cinquefoil, as the toothed moon rises:

This is the barrenness
of harvest or pestilence.
And the wife leaning out the window
with her hand extended, as in payment,
and the seeds
distinct, gold, calling
Come here
Come here, little one

And the soul creeps out of the tree.

@lindasejic.bsky.social As a fellow admirer of #Persephone, you might want to read #Averno by the late #poet #LouiseGluck It's, intense but IMHO, worth it. (That's code for I'm struggling NOT to buy a copy.🤦😖) 😂😂😂

"I was not prepared: sunset, end of summer. Demonstrations
of time as a continuum, as something coming to an end, not a suspension: the senses wouldn’t protect me. I caution you as I was never cautioned: you will never let go, you will never be satiated..." - #LouiseGluck (born: 22 April 1943)

Reading Louise Gluck’s Wild Iris, I’m struck by her vision of how we live between the smallest things & the biggest Thing. Strange to be positioned as a reader contemplatED by two beginner’s minds looking at us: flowers & a god. Both enduring & capable but us wavering. #poetry #reading #louisegluck

Another absolute cracker of an article about Louise Gluck, this time by her! 😉 Topics: the mysterious impulse to write, stability/instability, free association (differences btwn in poetry & psychoanalysis), standing for things, revision. How writing = exultation. #poetry #criticism #louisegluck

I thought the Collected Gluck would take me a while to find a way in, but flicking through I chanced upon Ararat & read that section through in a sitting. Amazing! So raw, yet so considered. Will return to it often. Gluck fans: Any particular recommendations for Gluck poems or volumes? #LouiseGluck

Louise Gluck was a masterful poet. Thanks for sharing. I remember teaching this one … “the sheaves / bound evenly and piled at the roadside / among cinqufoil” … what a line 🙌

« PORTRAIT

A child draws the outline of a body.
She draws what she can, but it is white all through,
she cannot fill in what she knows is there.
Within the unsupported line, she knows
that life is missing ; she has cut
one background from another. Like a child,
she turns to her mother.

And you draw the heart
against the emptiness she has created. »
