A beautiful little cabin like structure on the grounds of the Mabry Mill is bathed in gorgeous side light. A worm fence meanders along the edge leading your eye further into the image and ultimately to the rustic cabin! bit.ly/4r6qK2w #mabrymill #appalachia #christmasiscoming

Mabry Mill, one of the most visited cultural sites along the Blue Ridge Parkway, mile marker 176 to be specific. On this day, it was raining well, so the air is a bit micro-fragmented as rain can do, with so much moisture afloat in the silvered sky. The deciduous trees in the background fade into rain mingling with the oft-seen fog come late August days. Yet still there is that bright mountain green so prevalent along the parkways. Here you can see the dampened weathered grey vertical planks of the corner of the mill on the left, the water pelted with raindrops off the mill wheel behind the building. A traditional split-rail locust fence which has a deeper green foliage behind its rails, and on the right, the very old hand-laid stone arch bridge wall.

I’m not sure if that wall is a CCC build or, if it may have been built by Ed Mabry and his family. More likely the latter. Ed and his wife Lizzy ground corn as well as sawing lumber and blacksmithing for over three decades at this site. It still is operated to this day by volunteers who produce lumber to specs for various projects in this sector of the Parkway, including this site.

As I stepped out my Jeep, water took to falling—faster as I approached the mill. "Great," I thought. Once inside I smiled. For it actually was great. The refracting light from the rain radiated into the building, allowing some really cool images to sneak nto my cameras.

You're inside of Mabry's Mill, Virginia right off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Continually under operation for decades.

2 bikes, 1 spot, 5 years apart. Mabry Mill VA is one of the most photographed sites on Blue Ridge Parkway. I've ridden the length of BRP/Skyline Drive in both directions a few times; one of my favorite roads. Nice it's not far from home too!
