the background is shitty green. moldy, grungy, greyge green, streaky and dark. in black, streaky, inconsistent lettering, askew, like a sharpie written too quickly, reads "We continue". it is a depressing image, unclear whether it is a promise, a threat, or a plain statement, ambiguous. underneath, also in black, but small, reads "despite it all", but the "de" has been struck out, with "to" replacing it. to spite it all. and that corner brightens, brightens to a small, almost painful to look at tiny corner of yellow, and from that painful, tiny brightness arises a bud, a sprout. two beginner leaves, and a too-early flower bud, and roots, bare brown-white roots reaching into the bright. in examining this too small, too bright, impossible thing, you realize there is even smaller print, in white, in all caps, which reads "WE GROW". the whole piece is muddy, overwrought, quickly made, filled with too blatant symbolism, a beginner's idea of meaning. and still: we continue, despite and to spite it all. we grow.

i set out to doodle, one kid said what i was working on looked like an eye, and suddenly they were all (mostly hidden) eyes. and again, no claims this is Great Art — it's a 1h digital doodle — but this is half what creativity is, following a path you didn't know you were making.
