Edmond Rakotoarivelo, plus connu sous le nom de maître Ratafia, est décédé dimanche à l’aube à l’âge de 96 ans.** --- Edmond Rakotoarivelo lors d’un point de presse  à son domicile au mois de mars 2025. Edmond Rakotoarivelo s’est éteint paisiblement dimanche à son domicile d’Amboasarikely, près d’Antsahavola. Né le 25 mars 1930, celui que beaucoup considéraient comme une véritable mémoire vivante du sport malgache avait célébré ses 95 ans en mars dernier, entouré de sa famille et de son club de cœur, le Stade Olympique de l’Emyrne (SOE). Une longévité exceptionnelle, marquée par une passion intacte pour le sport et la transmission. Ancien entraîneur emblématique de basketball du SOE, maître Ratafia était bien plus qu’un technicien. Observateur attentif et pédagogue hors pair, il aimait partager son vécu, ses expériences et son regard sur l’évolution du basketball malgache. Lors de son jubilé l’an dernier, il se remémorait avec émotion l’un de ses plus beaux souvenirs : une victoire mémorable contre la redoutable équipe de Sotema lors d’un match triangulaire. Battus lors du premier affrontement, les joueurs du SOE avaient renversé tous les pronostics en finale. « À partir de là, le Stade Olympique de l’Emyrne a régné sur le basketball malgache », confiait-il avec fierté. ## Formateur de générations Figure tutélaire du basketball national, Edmond Rakotoarivelo laisse derrière lui un héritage sportif et humain inestimable. Le président du SOE, Solofo Mendrika Rasendrahasina, a livré un témoignage poignant : « J’ai appris bien plus que le basketball à ses côtés. Il nous formait aussi bien physiquement que moralement. Pour lui, sport et études étaient indissociables. Peu importe la taille de l’adversaire, on gagne si l’on ose combattre. » Profondément croyant, maître Ratafia a toujours placé la foi et les valeurs humaines au centre de son engagement. De nombreux jeunes qu’il a encadrés ont ensuite brillé dans divers secteurs : médecins, magistrats, enseignants ou chercheurs. Légende du SOE et du sport malgache en général, Edmond Rakotoarivelo avait d’abord consacré sa jeunesse au rugby, notamment au rugby à XIII, où il fut membre de l’équipe nationale, avant de marquer durablement le basketball. Sa rigueur et son sens de l’organisation l’avaient conduit à être nommé secrétaire général du SOE dès 1954 par Marius Randranto, alors président du club. Entraîneur respecté, il a porté haut les couleurs du basketball malgache, notamment avec l’équipe nationale féminine, présente aux Jeux de la Francophonie au Maroc, aux Jeux des îles de l’océan Indien à Maurice en 1985, lors d’une tournée en Chine et aux championnats d’Afrique à Dakar. Malgré cette carrière exceptionnelle, sa seule reconnaissance officielle demeure une médaille de Chevalier du mérite sportif, remise sous l’ère Ratsiraka par le Premier ministre de l’époque, Pascal Rakotomavo. Pour Bayard Razafindralambo, coach de basketball, « c’était une perle rare, dotée d’un don unique pour transmettre l’amour du ballon orange. Il a tout donné sans jamais rien exiger en retour ». Avec la disparition de maître Ratafia, c’est une page majeure de l’histoire du basketball malgache qui se tourne. _Donné Raherinjatovo_
