Disclosure of youth criminal records is prohibited globally. In Ontario, many pregnant 'juvenile delinquents' were incarcerated in #MaternityHomes. Records obtained by adoptees would not disclose offenses, suggesting that their mothers were there due to stigma and shame for being pregnant and unwed.

One of the books that needs to be read re the history of boom years of #FamilySeparation (via the US adoption system) after WWII and the role of #MaternityHomes is Rickie Solinger's "Wake Up Little Susie." Superb. In most public libraries. Unpacks race/class/power.

In 1965, the Registrar General recorded 𝟕,𝟕𝟖𝟕 live births to #unmarriedmothers. Oddly, the same year 1,859 mothers were documented in #maternityhomes, as indicated in the annual Public Welfare report. 👇

These Maternity Homes Offer Sanctuary, but It Can Feel Oppressive Unregulated homes are proliferating amid abortion restrictions and a housing crunch. Some limit residents’ movements, contacts and day-to-day decisions.
