📸 We hope you enjoyed #MathsConf37 as much as we did!
A huge thank you to all our attendees, workshop leaders, and exhibitors for your support, energy, and valuable contributions 💛🔢 Especially to our host @misterrapley.bsky.social
and our Events Innovation Partner@aqaeducation.bsky.social 🙌✨
Following on from #mathsconf37, I used cuessinare rods to model why multiplying fractions works. This is a couple of my students recordings of my modelling!
A collection of questions asking to factorise the difference of two squares where completing the square is required.
Crack on Y11.
Thanks again @mathsjem.bsky.social for #MathsConf37 workshop.
👇🏻This is a blog version of a workshop I ran for #MathsConf37, about adapting a single paper-folding task to suit different classes.
It also contains a link to a PPT with step-by-step instructions for pupils, which can be copied into a lesson resource.

Thanks to @joausten.bsky.social for the idea in his #MathsConf37 session.
I've got a few more features I'd like to add to this, but I'm way too tired after the weekend!
Thanks so much for the lovely review Jo! #Mathsconf37
New! A quick blog post about #mathsconf37.

A progression of difference of two square questions from easy to hard.
I very rough scribble of a progression of diff. of two squares I made during @mathsjem.bsky.social’s session - after she showed the 3 (only) examples from an old textbook.
My brain was completely fried (thanks Jo!) by this point so - what questions have I missed?!

In my #MathsConf37 talk yesterday I showed a woodcut from 1503 in which the illustrator appears to have made an arithmetical error. If you're interested to know more, here's a blog about it: robeastaway.com/blog/boethiu...
Had a great time at #MathsConf37!
In my session we looked at models and manipulatives that are still underrated and underused in primary maths.
Here's a flavour of it, starting with an interactive 'to scale' multiplication square from Mathigon.

What's the maximum number of right angles you can have in a polygon? What about a polygon with 100 sides?
Got FAR too carried away during a great "Always, Sometimes, Never" prompt from @priy45hah.bsky.social in her and Ruth's #MathsConf37 session yesterday.
The A,S,N prompt was "A pentagon has 3 right angles".
This task is the result. Can you generalise?
Great day at #mathsconf37 yesterday. Some great workshops (I only wish I could’ve seen more of them) and picked up a lot. Great host school too - lovely building and facilities.
A Gattegno chart with commas separating the larger numbers, e.g. 1,000 rather than 1000.
Quick win #1 from @joausten.bsky.social's fantastic session at #MathsConf37.
Comma option added to the Gattegno chart.

Two Casio calculators, old and new.
Thanks for the calculator upgrade @casioeducationuk.bsky.social!

Thoroughly enjoyed #mathsconf37.
So lovely to meet new people and those whom I’ve seen/met virtually. Thank you to all those who attended the session @rfb23.bsky.social and I delivered. Thrilled to have had nearly a full house! @lasalleed.bsky.social
Loving being able to catch up on #MathsConf37, enjoying reading about some really interesting sessions! Sounds like another amazing day!!
Thanks so much for attending my workshop Jo! And learning something new on ExamWizard! Hope that it goes well with stretching KS3 and 4 pupils!
And thanks for your workshop on factorising - thought provoking and a lot of fun doing the Maths! #MathsConf37
Lovely day at #mathsconf37. I learnt a cool fact about Rubik’s Cube colours and discovered some gold dust on ExamWizard. Loved all the sessions I attended and enjoyed catching up with everyone. Also enjoyed delivering my session on factorising. 1/2
A method of factorising
At #mathsconf37 @mathsjem.bsky.social did a ‘fun with factorising’ session and taught us this fun way of factorising. I came home and showed my year 11 son, he did the second one and liked the new (well, very old!) method! Thanks Jo! #MathsToday
Absolutely amazing #mathsconf37. The amount of motivated teachers across our country is inspiring! Highlights from @taylorda01.bsky.social for those lists, @mathsjem.bsky.social for making my head hurt. @studymaths.bsky.social because I've got a new fave manipulative.

Fun day at #mathsconf37 today! Made so much better by the surprise of seeing my friend Georgina there! #MathsToday
I had a great day today representing @yrmathshub.bsky.social at #MathsConf37 in Sheffield- so many Secondary Maths teachers in one place that had travelled far and wide!
And a privilege to run a session with the wonderful @VicciM1.
Great day! Great people!☺️
I had such a good time at #MathsConf37 today - 3 great sessions (one of which I was too engrossed in to post about!) and lots of interesting conversations. Thank you to everyone who came to my session for getting so involved. Looking forward to the next one now!
Final workshop on having fun factorising! Looking forward to @mathsjem.bsky.social's talk! #Mathsconf37
And right at the end @blatherwicksam.bsky.social blew my mind by pointing out a connection between the differences of the two sums that I hadn’t spotted at all. Brilliant session! #MathsConf37
More multiplication squares
Squares with a magic number
Factorising quadratics in a grid
Now introducing the idea of constant diagonal product - the “magic number” - and using this to factorise quadratics
#MathsConf37
Factorising quadratic expressions using ratio tables. Lovely stuff @blatherwicksam.bsky.social! #Mathsconf37
More multiplication squares
We have done so much maths in this session and I haven’t been able to take pictures of even half of it! These ones are fun - there’s now the extra rule that patterned squares must be the same number. #MathsConf37
Fun with paper folding at #mathsconf37
