She's a sorceress and the priestess of god R'hllor also known as Lord of Light and the Heart of Fire among the others. Melisandre comes from the city of Asshai a mysterious place known mostly as a location where one may gain forbidden knowledge and powers. Main task of followers of R'hllor is preparation for an apocalyptic event called the Long Night that is prophesized to come again and searching for Azor Ahai reborn. Azor Ahai is a legendary hero who supposedly ended the first Long Night. Melisandre believes that king Stannis Baratheon is new Azor Ahai, so she comes to his court and convinces him to turn away from the squabbles of ordinary men and to prepare for the things to come. Despite her good intentions Melisandre is one of the most morally ambiguous characters in the series. Religion of R'hllor is based on the notion that stopping the Long Night requires some extreme sacrifices, including burning people alive. Under her influence king Stannis starts to punish those who displease him by executing them in that manner and doing other unsavory things. Like all followers of Lord of Light Melisandre has fire powers and an ability to see visions in flames. On my picture her robes, hair, figure and fire coming from her hands form the shape of a fiery heart, which is a symbol of R'hllor. In that way I wanted to show Melisandre's devotion to her god.
