Would you believe I found #Microcystis in the top layer of #sediment at 17 mtr depth in lake #Haarlemmermeersebos / NL
#cyanobacteria #citizenscience #microscopy water temperature 4,5°C
Some people see faces in clouds. I see them in #cyanobacteria. Even #Microcystis can roll their eyes😳

An overview on clay boulders at the bottom of the lake.
Faint view of the sailboat wreck lying at 5-7 mtr depth. Seen from the surface.
A Microcystis colony. Cyanobacteria
Dutch waters are known for its bad visibility. Well in comparison with tropical waters thats true. 1-4 mtr is common. Yesterday I measured a #Secchi depth of 13,8 mtr. I could even see the wreck at 5-7 depth from the surface. There are still #Microcystis colonies present at 5°C. #cyanobacteria
Microcystis is a bluegreen algae or better said, cyanobacteria. It produces oxygen, but can also become toxic. A colony is formed and held together in a mucilage layer. The open net-like structure of this colony is one of the many morphological appearences #Microcystis can have.
Different structure same colony of Microcystis.
A Microcystis colony of about 1 cm in length.
#cyanobacteria #Microcystis is almost #art in the form of natural #pointillism It's structure is open and beautiful. These colonies can be big. Sometimes 1 cm! #plankton #bacteria #freshwater #microscopy
#Microcystis aeruginosa is actually beautiful under a #microscope. Especially when stained with indian ink, when the #mucilage (white edges) becomes visible. Colony is about 3-3,5 mm in size.#plankton is fun! #algae #microscopy #photopgraphy #freshwater #citizenscience
#Blauwalgen die ik ving zweefden nog in de waterkolom door wind en stroming, maar wat gebeurt er als die wegvallen? De grotere koloniën gaan drijven en de kleinere blijven zweven. #citizenscience #plankton #cyanobacteria #microcystis

Flow in an isolated lake. It's partially caused by an active mixing system amplified by a strong wind. Night #scuba #diving. This is the front deck of a small sailboat scuttled in 2017 functioning as an artificial reef. The particles floating by are #Microcystis colonies.
How about this #Microcystis cell disguised as a Ninja turtle.😁
#freshwater #plankton is perhaps not as beautiful as marine plankton, but just as important. It is teeming with nauplius and rotifers. There is even a flow in the jar. On the bottom, mainly #Aulacoseira sp (bloom ongoing) and little bubbles of oxygen. Top #Microcystis #citizenscience
Take a closer look at this #rotifer Chomping jaws with teeth #mastax and juggling a small #Microcystis colony. Also two eggs attached.

How does #cyanobacteria #Microcystis aeruginosa keeps cells together in an open structure #mucilage #polysaccharides is pretty strong! #microscopy #bacteria #freshwater
Isolated a giant #Microcystis aeruginosa colony yesterday during snorkeling. It's pretty sturdy as well as it survived a car ride home and the narrow opening of my pipet. #cyanobacteria #freshwater #Microscopy #citizenscience

Background of magenta circles packed into one layer. In the middle of the image, we see yellow filaments made up of rectangular cells surrounding five large green cells.
Happy #FluorescentFriday! Autofluorescence of cells embedded within a #Microcystis aggregate.
