Beloved undergrounders
Hand sized shovellors
Blind to all but their purpose
Kindly in their burrows
As Wind in the Willows
Adjusting spectacles
Rechecking daily numbers
Boring
Unnoticed
Subtle in their skills
Digging gently for their secrets
Not even leaving molehills

My lawn was perfect, my garden a dream,
I cared for it daily, my pride supreme.
But one shocking morning,
after I opened my curtains
I had to double check
to be perfectly certain
miniature hills suddenly appeared over night
ravaged by moles—
it was a terrible sight

At least moles dine on worms and the grubs

How big was the mole?!

A mole hill that has been eroded by rain leaving tiny columns of sandy soil, each one capped by a pebble.

I think eroded molehills are cool. They look like hoodoos, geological formations found in badlands. Hoodoos form where a cap of hard rock protects a cone of underlying softer rock from erosion. Note the pebbles capping each column of sandy soil. #molehill #geology #hoodoo #rockformations
