I was the top fundraiser in #motionball Kelowna yesterday. But I didn’t expect to be named Captain of the year, and certainly didn’t plan to make 400 people cry as I spoke about our efforts, my sister Sarah, and how the campaign evolved when dad passed away last month. I just learned that the Squamish Rotary Club were so inspired by my posts and stories on LinkedIn that they UNANIMOUSLY voted to host a #motionball for #SpecialOlympics Marathon of Sports event in their community! I’m so excited for the athletes and leaders in Squamish!

But I was still quiet and keeping these feelings to myself. Then I decided to form a team for #motionball and introduce my staff to the event, and it clicked—not only was I able to bring joy and inclusion to #SpecialOlympic athletes, the day inspired my staff to become #champions of #inclusion…
I learned to feel content with myself and began to find connection. Attending #motionball Marathon of Sport in 2018 made me see how much people like my sister also feel excluded, not because of trauma but because they are not included by society. It really was “a day of fun and inclusion!”…
It was a powerful story. She shed a few tears while she was telling me, and so did I as I listened.
So I decided to share about why Special Olympics and #motionball in particular matters to me. It goes beyond the obvious—that my sister has Down Syndrome. It begins with my childhood trauma…
Thanks for asking. She is low functioning. But no one has given up on her. We love her and care for her. Had a 30min video call with her today just ‘cause she was board in fact. But that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Inclusion is important. It’s one of the many reasons for my #motionball campaign.
