A rare sign of hope as mountain gorillas welcome two sets of twins in Africa Once close to extinction, the species is rebounding due to years of conservation work

Two sets of twins in Africa - In the 1970s and 80s, barely 250 #mountaingorillas were left in the world, and many conservationists predicted their extinction. Now, there are more than a thousand – and the numbers continue to grow. www.theguardian.com/environment/... #Gorillas #ActOnClimate

🦍🦍 Twin mountain gorillas — born in less than 1% of births — just arrived at Virunga National Park. With only ~1,050 left in the wild, this is a profound sign of hope.

Conservation works.

“This is not about the discovery of entirely new parasites. The problem lies in changes in the composition and abundance of parasite communities that have long been present in the mountain gorilla population, with some species now becoming dominant and clinically significant. Similar processes are well known in livestock farming, where high host density, spatial restriction, and environmental changes often lead to the overgrowth of previously inconspicuous parasites and the development of disease,” explains Barbora Pafčo from the Institute of Vertebrate Biology of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
