Photo of an early Christian cross in stone, often erroneously called a Celtic Cross. Quick explanation: The Celts lived centuries before Christianisation. The cross is missing about a quarter of its right-hand side. The top consists of a circle within which there is a cross shape, the bottom of which extends down more than the circle’s height. The cross itself is made of a Celtic knotted pattern. At the side of the cross stem, however, are depicted figures from Viking mythology. These early Christians obviously preferred to hedge their bets. The cross is placed under a lean-to shelter with wooden pillars which is open to the elements at the left. In the background many more such crosses are visible, lined up in two rows on the right against the wall of the shelter.

This is an early Christian cross at Maughold, Island of Man, a so-called Celtic Cross (although that’s historically not accurate). I always wondered how to turn that into knitting 🧐🤓

At the edges of the picture can be seen part of a knitted jumper/ sweater in alpaca wool and parts of an orange and a yellow rosette, awarded to other items. The knitted hat is made in two natural alpaca wool colours, a rich brown and a creamy white. On a dark background are white alpaca shapes with some Scandinavian colourwork decorations around them. The single ribbing has spots of creamy in its picot edge.

This is a proud moment for me!
The hat was a commission from the chief handler at Sheriff Alpacas, Yorkshire. Unbeknown to me, she entered my knitwork as well as her animals at the National Show and it’s won a rosette!🏵️🥰
