Freaky Friday: A story about Cape Roger, Placentia Bay. "A group of pirates used Cape Roger as their base. Their ship travelled to Spain to plunder ships, and on the way back to Newfoundland, their ship was sunk by a rival pirate ship. Since then, unintelligible voices and industrious noises have been heard at Cape Roger. Nightly flashes of lights along the cape are rumoured to be those of the phantom pirate ships fighting."

Folk remedy for snow blindness from Wesleyville, NL. "In my grandfather's day when there were no doctors most minor illnesses were cured by home remedies. The cure which they used for snow blindness was to eat tea leaves. They say this would actually cure the snow blindness. The tea leaves may also be put in linen and put on the eyes for a while." Claude Bishop, from Mr. William Fifield, 75, Wesleyville, 1969.

Post image A poem from St. John's about Valentine's Day: "My heart is like a cabbage, It is nearly broken in two, The leaves I give to others, But I give the heart to you."

A poem from St. John's about Valentine's Day: "My heart is like a cabbage, It is nearly broken in two, The leaves I give to others, But I give the heart to you."

An account from St.John's, Newfoundland and Labrador on Valentine's Day traditions: "On Valentine's Day we used to buy cards and send them to our friends. We wouldn't sign our name, just our initials or sometimes just a question mark and let our friends guess who was sending them a card."

An account from Buchans, Newfoundland and Labrador on Valentine's Day traditions: " The technique of delivering [Valentine's] cards is what I wish to call attention to. The person who brings them, opens the door and throws the cards haphazardly into the porch, making sure to slam the door on his retreat. This is to make sure that the residents know that cards have been left there. The person bringing the cards is not to be seen for some unknown reason."

A story about ghosts and supernatural beings from Cape Broyle, Newfoundland and Labrador. At a wake, a man notices that the deceased's clothing is too long for him. After the waked man was buried, the man would see his apparition stumbling up the road. He was apparently stumbling over his long garments. The third night a priest goes with the man, speaks to the apparition, and he is never seen by the man again.

Missus Monday

Missus Monday

Are you able to help us identify Mrs.MacIsaac, a housewife living in Stephenville in the 1960s? She is from St. Alban's. The document states "Terri's mother, Mrs.MacIsaac, tells me that if she ever thinks about someone when that person has been away from home for a long time, sure enough, she is sure to hear from that person in the immediate future."

It's time for another #MissusMonday! Sometimes the full names of informants, often married women, are not recorded. When we come across them, MUNFLA tries to recover the person's name to recognize their contribution. Are you able to help us identify Mrs. MacIsaac?
