Long about 2007ish, I entered an on-line writing contest sponsored by The Romance Studio (an author promotions website). It was a three-round competition. Stage One and Stage Two of the contest were writing the first 1000 words of two different stories based on a pre-determined story prompt. The third stage was to create a newsletter.

This excerpt leads up to the final confrontation across the poker table. EXCERPT: Once seated, Lainie placed her evening bag on her lap then arranged her rack of chips just so in front of her, placed a water glass to her left, and the saucer and cup that would hold her coffee later in the game to her right which, when taken together, presented a barrier of sorts around her small area of the table.
