In 1349 #Mystras became the capital of #Byzantine Despotate of Morea in 1349 & palaces & monasteries were built. It’s vast & easily takes a day to visit - a place where you run out of superlatives.

The castle at #Mystras in the #Peloponnese, on a visit at the end of September last year.
Mystras was founded by William II de Villehardouin in 1248-49, but it was taken by the Byzantines 10 years later, and the #castle and growing city became the seat of the #Byzantine governor of Morea.
