He was vaguely aware that it wasn’t fair for Kento to be the target of his displeasure, but it was easier to get a rise out of him than his father, not to mention that the consequences for even trying were vastly different—after all, Kento could do nothing to retaliate against the crown prince. “Looked a little sloppy today, Kento-kun.” By now, Satoru saw more than heard Kento’s short inhale and slow exhale as the taunt sank. His lips pursed and he closed his eyes, counting for two beats before turning around and bowing lightly at the waist. “Sorry to disappoint, denka-sama.” “I didn’t say I was disappointed. Just, you know, stating a fact.” “I see. Thank you, then, for your observation. I will take it into account in the future.” The delivery was stiff, the politeness obviously forced. But there was still a certain amount of irreverence in it that Satoru truly appreciated. Others in the court would certainly find it offensive, perhaps to the point of chastising or even punishing the young trainee, but for Satoru it was a breath of fresh air. He would much prefer a more visceral response from the other boy but he acknowledged how dangerous that would be so he reigned himself in. At first, at least. home for NanabinGo 2025 Once Suguru and Kento were alone in the kitchen, Suguru closed the door and leaned against it, giving Kento an almost predatory look that had him take a step back on instinct. “Why do I get the feeling this isn’t about cake?” “Because you’re very smart. So, adopted kids, right?” Kento just nodded, and Suguru mimicked the motion. “And you’re spending most of your Saturday at a kid’s party. No calls or texts asking how the kids are doing or where you are or when you’re getting back home.” Kento squinted at him. “What’re you getting at?” Suguru went around him and brought out the cake from the fridge, setting it on the counter before moving around the kitchen looking for disposable plates and aluminum foil. “There’s no one waiting for you guys at home, right? Safe to say then, you’re single.” Kento cleared his throat, reaching for the knife they’d used earlier to cut the cake just to have something to do. “I am, yes.” “Good.
