This beautiful photograph shows a Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta), one of Europe's most recognisable and striking butterflies. The Red Admiral's dorsal (upper) side is dominated by a deep, velvety black ground color, slashed with vivid orange-red bands. On the forewings, this band runs obliquely across the middle, here well lit by sunlight, appearing as a pure, saturated flame-orange. The hindwing margins carry a matching orange-red border edged with tiny black dots, and near the body you can detect faint hints of blue eye-spots. The forewing tips are adorned with a cluster of crisp white spots, creating a bold contrast against the dark wing surface. Butterfly wings are tiled with thousands of microscopic scales, and this image captures their texture really nicely. The black areas appear dense and light-absorbing, like velvet, while the orange bands have a slightly grainier, ridged texture from the pigmented scale structure. The white spots appear almost luminous and smooth by comparison, reflecting light cleanly. The photo shows the Admiral as the warm late-afternoon light rakes across the wing surface at an angle that reveals the three-dimensionality of the scales and the fluffy thorax fur in good detail, while the cream-white Buddleia-type flower clusters provide a pertect tonal contrast to the butterfly's rich coloring.
I rarely get a to shoot butterflies, but there are some in my archives. Chose this Red Admiral and dusted it a bit for Rina's #ButterflyWeek.

A vivid orange-red butterfly with bold eye-like spots on each wing (a peacock butterfly) rests with wings fully open on a cluster of small white wildflowers. Its fuzzy brown body and long antennae are visible, while the background is a soft, blurred green that makes the colours stand out. Facts about this butterfly (Peacock – Aglais io): • 🦋 The large “eye spots” on its wings are a defence mechanism, designed to startle predators like birds. • 🌍 Common across the UK and much of Europe, often seen in gardens, woodlands, and meadows. • ❄️ One of the few butterflies in the UK that hibernates as an adult, hiding in sheds, attics, or tree hollows over winter. • 🌼 Feeds on nectar from flowers like buddleia, thistles, and umbellifers (like the one in my photo). • 🐛 Caterpillars feed mainly on stinging nettles and live communally in silken webs. • 🎨 The underside of the wings is very dark and camouflaged, helping it blend in when wings are closed.
