I first came out on a National Coming Out Day, so it's always been important to me. It seemed to fade as a "notable" day, but now it's back. In the face of fascism, cruelty, and hatred, #ncod is a powerful message against those who would re-marginalize us. Whatever it may be, "take your next step."

Today is National Coming Out Day! I first came out as queer when I was 29 years old, which also happened to be when Trump took office the first time and days before I met my now-wife and business partner, Mags.

Representation in books is important for self-affirmation and for learning about other people.

On this National Coming Out Day, I encourage you to explore the books of E. Lynn Harris.

And you can check out my books, too.

Homophobia and transphobia thrive in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance, but coming out may not always be safe for those who are a part of multiple marginalized communities. On #NationalComingOutDay, we celebrate all LGBTQIA people wherever they are in their journey. #NCOD

Today is #NationalComingOutDay.

It's a day of #LGBTQIA+ visibility and representation.
There is freedom in living your own truth.

If you're not ready to come out, for any reason, that's okay. There is a whole community waiting to love and support you when you're ready.

How To Not Be A Dick
If Someone Comes Out To You
DON'T use the qualifiers “still” or “anyway” when you say "I love you." That's grade A dickishness, and not the kind gay people like.
DON'T say that you always knew they were gay because no you fucking didn't until I just told you.
DON'T turn around 'cause you're gonna see my heart breaking.
DON'T talk about how hard it will be for you to tell your church, your neighbors, or your Pinochle club. This isn't about you, you selfish asshole.
DON'T burst into tears. It's a well-known fact that the tears of straight people give gay people erections.
DON'T ask if they are sure. Gayness can be whimsical, but it's not a whim.
DON'T murder them. I hear they have really terrible Wi-Fi in prison.

hands in rainbow colors making a heart. I'M A SAFE PERSON TO COME OUT TO. NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY

If someone comes out to you:
"COMING OUT" "of the closet"
is the process by which someone...

1. Accepts and identifies with their gender identity and/or sexual orientation; and
2. Shares their identity willingly with others.
Sometimes We talk about coming out as if it were a one time thing. But for most folks coming out is a series of decisions- sometimes daily- that LGBTQ people navigate in every new setting they enter (Most people aren't like Ellen, where they come out once and then the whole world knows.)

People may be "OUT" in some spaces, and "IN" → in others.
to Family to Friends
to Classmates/Coworkers
to Religious Community

A decision to come out to a person or group is one of safety, comfort, trust, & readiness.
It's dangerous, unhealthy, and unhelpful to force someone to come out, or to "out" someone else (ie, disclosing someone's gender identity or sexual orientation to others without the person's consent), regardless of your intentions (sometimes people think they're being helpful, or acting on the person's behalf to conquer their fears)

IF SOMEONE COMES OUT TO YOU.....
1. Say "I always knew," or downplay the significance of their sharing with you.
2. Go tell everyone, bragging about your "new trans friend."
3. Forget that they are still the person you knew, befriended, or loved before.
4. Ask probing questions, or cross personal barriers you wouldn't have crossed earlier. 5. Assume you know why they came out to you..
1. Know this is a sign of huge trust! (Yay!)
2. Check-in on how confidential this is (Do other people know? Is this a secret?)
3. Remember that their gender/sexuality is just one dimension (of many) of them.
4. Show interest and curiosity about this part of them that they are sharing with you.
5. Ask them how you can best support them.

My attempts to keep my sexuality hidden nearly led to me being arrested at 14 years old.

I came out to my bigoted conservative family at 14, and it was fucking hard. It still is. But I'm the better for it, and I eventually found more people who would support me through it. You will too, even if you don't want to come out, or you're scared, or under threat. You deserve happiness. #NCOD

My first ever public outing (pun intended) as a #queer person.

On the way to Erie, we heard about the attack on #MatthewShepard, (who was slightly older than me but not by much) on the car radio.

We went anyway. It did not feel safe.

We went anyway.

Matthew died two days later.

Ugh.
