Episode 15: David Poeppel on Thought, Language, and How to Understand the Brain
Episode 15: David Poeppel on Thought, Language, and How to Understand the Brain YouTube video by Sean Carroll

This is an older episode, but is still helpful. Gee it's tough how little analogue computation is known, though. Here it's not even considered an option

Points developed here about AI and brains could be developed for understanding mammalian species that have diverged >80 million years ago: mouse and humans.
I'm all for neuroscience of all animals for that matter, but the divergence and specialization suggests we need nuance.

The Smell Test

Have you ever wondered why certain smells can take you on an emotional trip down memory lane? The answer is more mechanical than you might think. While most of our five senses send their information to the evolutionarily older base of our brain, the signals traveling from your nose enter a relatively newer part called the limbic system.

The limbic system is the emotion and memory center of your mind. As electrical signals travel from your nose to the rest of your brain, this center is activated as well. This is why we often associate certain smells with strong emotions and memories. You may have even found that you forgot a particular memory until the right odor brought it back to your conscious mind.

The mechanics of our sense of smell also hold untapped potential when it comes to diagnosing certain diseases. Think about your last trip to the doctor’s office. They may have tested your vision with an eye chart, your hearing with an audiogram, or even your sense of touch with a neurological exam. But has your doctor ever tested your sense of smell? Probably not.

That’s because providers typically look for gross abnormalities that indicate acute illness by testing basic brain functions. However, if one is searching for early signs of chronic diseases that affect higher brain functions—such as Parkinson’s or dementia—the sense of smell may be a more useful indicator. Studies have found that dysfunction in the sense of smell is one of the earliest signs of these diseases, appearing years before other symptoms develop.

So, the next time you stop to smell the roses, don’t just appreciate their fragrance—appreciate your nose. It may be more important than we thought.

What happens when billions of dollars in research funding goes away The Indicator from Planet Money · Episode

After an email asking for this episode, I am delighted to see it! A broader episode that also touches on how the pharmaceutical company relies on research funded by the NIH may be a great topic for @planetmoney.bsky.social

Really looking forward to giving this preprint a proper read. A new cohort of callosotomy patients is exciting. The application of interhemispheric functional-connectivity analysis, diffusion imaging and a radically new model of hemispheric interaction is very intriguing. #neuroskyance #splitbrain

Our brain shape influences how it works, landmark study finds Joint research by the University of Sydney and Monash University published in Nature has upended conventional wisdom on the brain, showing that its contours and geometry could be a bigger influence on...

Very interesting article on research connection brain shape to brain function. The paper sounds like it’s a bit above my understanding, so I’d love to hear if any #neuro folks have thoughts on this!

This is the most up-to-date and authoritative guide to transcranial focused ultrasound available. This method is rapidly becoming a key tool for investigating causal mechanisms in the human brain. It's development as a therapeutic device is the next frontier. #neuroskyance #neuroscience #brain 1/2
