MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI NAPOLI This famous scene of musicians playing instruments outside a house may in fact be an episode from a play, as we can see the musicians are raised up from street level. It may be that the house wall behind the figures is a barrier concealing a set change behind it. The music, which would hide the noise of a set change, is played by a male figure with a wide drum at right, another male figure at centre with finger-cymbals, and a female figure (if an actor, actually a man) playing the double flute at left, attended by a boy in a short tunic. They are all wearing masks, and the two male figures are dancing around. The mosaic is an emblema, a work in opus vermiculatum ("wormy work", so called due to the wormlike rows of tiny tesserae surrounding the figures) that would normally be at the centre of a triclinium. This piece comes from the so-called "Villa of Cicero" outside the Herculaneum Gate, which was one of the first buildings in Pompeii to be excavated: it was thoroughly pillaged of its fresco and mosaic work in the C18 and then reburied, and remains buried. This emblema is signed by a Greek artist at top left, Dioskourides of Samos, and shows how Greek art was used as a status symbol in the late Republic.

For #MosaicMonday we have a tricky Greek #emblema from #Pompeii, now in #Naples, which seems to show musicians playing and dancing in the street. But in fact they are all #actors in the #NewComedy, wearing masks. This is probably an entracte concealing a scene change. #AncientBluesky 🏺
