From what I've read, #NightOfTheHunter wasn't a success with movie goers or critics. In addition, Laughton didn't have a great time making it. The film was difficult to categorize in 1955 - it was (IMO) simply ahead of its time. The re-evaluation didn't start until the 1970s.
