Subculture Artisanal Ales

The day had started quietly, with a peaceful morning at Sourland Mountain Preserve watching Mallards glide across the water, the crisp autumn air filling my lungs. As I drove home from the preserve, I called Bhavna to discuss visiting Subculture Artisanal Ales in Florence, a place I had recently discovered while reviewing a list of breweries in Mercer County on the New Jersey Craft Beer website. It was relatively close to home, and, despite it being nearby, we’d never visited before.

We knew we would be hungry when we arrived, so while I was driving, Bhavna ordered pizza from a restaurant in Florence. We timed it just right—the pizza arrived just as we were stepping out of the car. We could fully relax and enjoy our time at the brewery without any delays.

Subculture Beer is a small independent craft brewery located along the Delaware River in the Florence-Roebling community of New Jersey. It specializes in artisan-produced beers, with a particular focus on hop-forward ales and classic German styles. The brewery also features special release beers from its wood-aged beer program and seasonal offerings from the R&D innovation program. As we approached the brewery, located at 11 West Second Street, it felt like a hidden gem nestled on a residential street. Adjacent to the brewery is the Florence United Methodist Church, and we parked on the street near the church. The glowing neon sign welcomed us inside, where the industrial-chic decor, paired with soft lighting and quirky art, created a vibe that was both relaxed and vibrant. Plants hung from the ceiling, and framed letters spelled out "SUBCULTURE" above the bar, adding a touch of personality to the space. We settled in and took a moment to soak in the surroundings—whether inside or outside on the spacious patio, there was no shortage of spots to unwind.

We shared tasters of eight different beers, each showcasing a different side of the brewery’s craft. Of all the options, my favourite was the Origin - Coffee Ale. This deep golden-coloured German Kolsch-style ale was brewed with coffee from Mortal Minds Coffee Roasters. The beer's smooth, grainy-sweet malt character mingled beautifully with the medium-light roast coffee, creating a balanced flavour profile. Subculture describes it as having notes of chocolate ganache, citrus, berries, and golden Oreo cookies, and it really did live up to that description. What really makes it stand out is the brewing process—it’s made with both direct bean contact and cold brew blending, giving it that rich, coffee-forward flavour while still letting the qualities of the beer shine through. With caffeine equivalent to about 2oz of coffee per pint, it was the perfect pick-me-up in liquid form.

Subculture takes great pride in crafting beers that are more than just flavours and aromas; they aim to create experiences that define a time and place. Their ethos is rooted in making well-crafted, expressive beers that are for everyone with an open mind and willing palate, while also catering to those who are passionate about unique, innovative brews. It's clear in the thought and energy they put into each beer, as well as the care taken to preserve the integrity of their products. As the brewery’s owner and brewer, David Williams, shares, they strive for the highest standards in brewing, from using proper glassware to ensuring that the beer is served just as intended.

In addition to Origin, we tried several other interesting beers, each with its own distinctive style. Shapes in the Clouds, a hazy pale ale with coconut, had a tropical flair that made it easy-drinking and refreshing. Golden Lager, a classic German-style Festbier, was crisp and clean with a grainy-sweet malt character and a hint of toast—ideal for anyone nostalgic for Oktoberfest. Petticoat Pils, a German Pilsener, had a crisp, dry finish and a crackery malt base, beautifully balanced with floral hops. The name of this beer is a nod to a Civil War skirmish site in nearby Columbus, NJ, adding a bit of local history to the experience.

For those who enjoy something bolder, Silos, an American stout, delivered dark, roasty chocolate notes with a hint of ground coffee and toast. It had a firm hop bitterness that gave it a medium-dry finish, making it perfect for the cooler weather. We also sampled Burton Reynolds, a Historical Burton Ale with deep, malty flavours and a slight sweetness, and GrunGrin, a German-style wheat beer with a smooth, fruity finish. The final taster of the day, Kinkora, was a light, crisp Kölsch, a perfect way to round out the tasting session.

Subculture Beer also prides itself on being a part of the local community, supporting arts and organizations in Burlington County and beyond. As we sat enjoying our beers, it was evident from the local art on the taproom walls and the pieces of history from the nearby Roebling Museum that Subculture is deeply connected to its roots. It’s clear that every detail, from the beer to the decor, is thoughtfully curated to create a sense of place and community.
