And even by imperfect masking, we apparently made the B/Yamagata strain go extinct. It hasn't been detected since March 2020 so the EU Medicines Agency said to remove it from the 2024-25 flu shots:

I wear an N95 mask (unstylish, hospital-white, 3M Aura) because
1) I simply don’t want covid, for as long as I can avoid it,
2) I don’t want to be part of the evolutionary landscape of this virus, and
3) to normalize masking, to help folks who are less healthy than I am.
