This little object is thought to be a decorative handle, perhaps for a stirring rod. It is cast in copper alloy and is dated to the Roman period by a comparable find excavated in a fort at Augst, Germany.

#Finds This object is a Palaeolithic [or Old Stone Age] handaxe. We think it is between 500,000 and 40,000 years old. Its maker was most likely a beetle-browed Neanderthal, an ancestral cousin of our lot.

This item is a large cast copper alloy bell, with rust marking where an iron clapper and suspension loop have been lost. Found close to the River Trent.

This is a Roman copper alloy crossbow brooch – named for a shape like that of the medieval weapon, though the bow is also what we call the vertical part of the brooch.
