A photograph of the little red lighthouse, located under the George Washington Bridge in the Washington Heights section of Northern Manhattan. There are large boulders in the foreground. Thick, granite chunks with rough facets. A tree with missing leaves is on the left. The few leaves that remain are orange/brown and brittle. The bridge towers above. Being this close to the bridge, you can see the rust and bolts and countless beams, in addition to the security gates on the bottom. In the background are the New Jersey Palisades. A wall of trees, all converting from their Summer greens to Fall hues. The Hudson River fills that gap. There’s a nice mix of a cool breeze from the river coming from in front, while the warmth of the sun hits you from behind. It truly is a magical spot to be found in the concrete wilderness of NYC.
“The Little Red Lighthouse”
Washington Heights, NYC
I remember climbing into the small porthole at the bottom and climbing up to the top. The smell of rust and moss and stale air is still very vivid.
