Competency-based training curriculum for TVETs to be offered in modules The State Department for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) has started the process of breaking down the TVET curriculum into small specializations which will be assessed and accredited within three months. According to TVETs Principal Secretary, Dr Esther Muoria, breaking down the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) into short modules will allow trainees to transition to the job market in a shorter period of time. It is also aimed at reducing the cost and the duration of time taken in training. “We are shifting from a situation where our young people will be in an institution, training for a whole year. We are doing this so that we give them an opportunity to transit to the world of work,” stated Dr Muoria. Once modularized, learners in TVET institutions will be able to undertake their preferred course in modules and get a certification for every level undertaken. This will also mean that upon completion of one level, the trainee can opt to proceed with the course or use the acquired skill to enter the job market. The restructured mode of study will also see TVETs adopt a micro-credential system to assess and certify learners. The micro-credential system is mostly used to accredit learners undertaking short training programs. One of the significant changes that will be introduced include the reduction of theory content with the PS stating that the new model will focus on imparting practical skills. “We are going to teach as very little theory as possible if not actually none, so that if it is communication, we are going to embed it within the trade area so that the communication that is taught is in accordance with that trade,” said Dr Muoria. She noted that the curriculum review will also standardize entry requirements for all learners hoping to pursue the course in TVETs. Further, it will allow learners including those already working in the informal sector to access skills training or upgrade their competencies progressively. “In another one month, we will make that curriculum completely ready so that those who are coming in May will have the same entry requirements. We are saying that whether you are coming in as a Class 8 drop-out or as Form-Four leaver with an A or an E, all of them will have the same entry behavior. They will start from the same level and they will be able to progress to their highest level or up to where they feel they are ready to join the world of work,” she said. The PS spoke when she officially opened the modularization of the CBET curricular workshop at the Nyeri National Polytechnic. The workshop brought together stakeholders in the TVET sub-sector and industry with the aim of realigning the curriculum to meet the market demands. She said that the new system will be rolled out in May this year across all TVETs in the country, adding that its implementation will be critical in accelerating enrollment in TVET institutions as well as attracting industrial investors into the country. As a way of keeping an updated inventory of the available skill sets in the country, the PS said that going forward, all TVET heads will be expected to submit returns of the number of people trained and certified under the new system alongside their credentials. “For the world to agree to come and establish their industries in Kenya, the most important factor is a skilled pool of youth. So the more we skill our youth the more we encourage industrialization into our country and our youth will automatically have jobs,” she said. “We want by the end of this year to have not less than two million youths in our institutions. But the people who will be graduating in 3 months depends on those who will have enrolled,” she added. **By Wangari Mwangi** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

Education CS announces opening of KUCCPS portal for degree applications Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced the opening of the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) portal for the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education graduates who scored a mean grade of C+ and above to apply for degree programs. The CS says that the portal will remain open until 21 April, adding that they are ready to receive applications from some 246,391 who qualified to join various degree programs. Ogamba noted that they are seeking to fill a total of 305,223 vacancies. Out of these slots, a total 245,495 are in public universities while 59,728 are in private universities. “We opened the portal from January but we did it in phases. The first time when we opened, it was for the purposes of those who wanted to undertake courses in Technical Vocational Education and Training institutions, Teacher Training Colleges and Kenya Medical Training College to be able to apply,” said the CS. “We have opened it today for university students and we are going to have it open for the next 30 days. We are now ready to deal with the issues relating to the admission of students in whatever they are taking and whichever university they are going to, both public and private,” he added. The CS also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting higher education in the country by availing loans and scholarships. He said that students who apply to join public universities during this year’s September intake would enjoy both student loans and government scholarships, whereas those who opt to be placed in private universities would only benefit from student loans. On the progress of the review of the new university funding model, Ogamba said that the committee which was set up by President William Ruto in September last year to look into the issues hindering the full implementation of the framework has already tabled its recommendations. The CS revealed that some of the modifications will touch on the means testing instrument to ensure that students are placed in funding bands that meet their financial capacity. Additionally, the National Committee on the Review of the Model had also reviewed the cost of university programs with the aim of aligning them to the cost of the same programs in universities in the East Africa region. Ogamba said that the ministry will be publicizing the modified model to the current and incoming students within the next 14 days as directed by the court of appeal. “Apart from that, the issues that were raised in the court are issues that we would include in that review and refine it so that when we roll it out in the coming days it will be one that meets the purpose of the funding model. As a government, we have been able to ensure that we balance the legal issues against the political and pragmatic situation so that nobody is at home on the basis that the funding model has not worked for them,” added the CS. The CS spoke on Friday during the fifth graduation ceremony of Nyeri National Polytechnic. During the event a total of 2,515 graduates were awarded certificates and diplomas in different fields. Ogamba said the Ministry was committed to expanding access to quality TVET education by rolling out various programs which will ensure that TVET learners acquire practical, hands-on skills for the job market. Terming TVET as the country’s hope for development, he urged the graduates to use their skills to be job creators and innovators. “The government is implementing the Competency-Based Education and Training. We are also strengthening the Dual Training Model, integrating industry experience with classroom learning to enhance employability. Our Recognition of Prior Learning programme of certifying skills acquired outside formal education, offering more opportunities for experienced workers further buttresses the determination to ensure Kenyans in the TVET sector have necessary validation to carry out their work,” he said. **By Wangari Mwangi and Geoffrey Chaura** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

First Lady calls for collective efforts to empower girls <p>The First Lady, Rachel Ruto, has called for concerted efforts to help young girls attain their full potential in life.</p> <p>Mrs. Ruto singled out abject poverty as one of the greatest impediments that hinders girls from realising their lifelong dreams, with the majority of them being forced to shoulder the burden of assisting their parents in fending for the family.</p> <p>She said no effort should be spared in ensuring every girl can access quality education and other essential services that can equip her with skills that can transform her life and make her contribute to the development of the nation.</p> <p>The First Lady was speaking during celebrations to mark this year’s World Thinking Day at the Nyeri Moi Complex in commemoration of 105 years since the founding of the Kenya Girl Guides Association.</p> <p>“Poverty remains one of the pressing issues limiting access to education, health and essential services for many girls. This is worsened by climate change that threatens the livelihoods of many communities, making it difficult for many girls to remain in schools.</p> <figure class="wp-caption alignright" id="attachment_143308" style="width: 324px"><img alt="" class="wp-image-143308" height="176" sizes="(max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px" src="http://www.kenyanews.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot-2025-02-22-175518-300x163.jpg" srcset="https://www.kenyanews.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot-2025-02-22-175518-300x163.jpg 300w, https://www.kenyanews.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Screenshot-2025-02-22-175518.jpg 727w" width="324"/><figcaption class="wp-caption-text"><strong>The First Lady, Rachel Ruto, seated with other dignitaries during celebrations to mark this year’s World Thinking Day at the Nyeri Moi Complex Primary School on February 21, 2025. She has called for support for the Scouting Movement to help address challenges affecting the country, such as climate change and food insecurity.</strong></figcaption></figure> <p>A strategy to achieve the government’s target of 100 per cent enrolment and retention is ensuring Kenya meets its feeding goal of 10 million children accessing food by 2030,” she said.</p> <p>The First Lady similarly challenged learning institutions to support the Girl Guides Association in coming up with practical interventions that can help mitigate some of the challenges facing the country, such as climate change and food insecurity.</p> <p>Mrs. Ruto noted that with proper training and support from other organs such as the 4K club, the movement can greatly help transform their immediate community by coming up with activities that will eventually have an enduring impact countrywide.</p> <p>“As Girl Guides, we have the One Tree Campaign as an environmental flagship project. However, I urge the Guides to increase the tree cover from one tree to 30 trees a year. Some of those trees should be fruit trees. Collaborate with the 4K Club and allocate a piece of land for planting fruit trees and help mitigate against food insecurity,” she added.</p> <p>Gender PS Ann Wang’ombe lauded the First Lady for spearheading efforts in advocating for gender equality and women empowerment in the country.</p> <p>Wang’ombe said it is through such initiatives that women can be placed in a vantage position that can thrust them into leadership positions that can contribute to the development of the country.</p> <p>“This movement (Girl Guide) is not only about learning skills but also about building character. It is about courage and it’s about standing for what is right. It is very hard to find a Girl Guide in the wrong. So, we must carry that virtue along with fostering a world where women and girls are valued, respected and given equal opportunities,” she said.</p> <p>The PS also welcomed the recent formation of a 42-member taskforce to address soaring femicide cases in the country, saying it will help in a big way to curb the vice.</p> <p>She further dispelled the false notion that gender equality only advocates for the rights of the girl child, while maintaining that, on the contrary, this involves fighting for the welfare of both sexes.</p> <p>On her part, Terry Chebet Maina, who is the National Chair, Kenya Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, called upon the movement to keep the spirit of the pioneers of the movement alive.</p> <p>Maina said when General Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell and his wife Olave St. Clair formed the Scouting Movement, it was to help nurture young men and women who can be dependable in society.</p> <p>She therefore said this year’s celebration is to help reflect on the spirit behind the formation of the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movement and ensure its founding clarion call endures for posterity.</p> <p>“As we gather here to celebrate and commemorate the Girl Guide movement, we are reminded of the incredible impact we have both locally and globally in advancing the rights of young men and women. This year we came under the theme; Our Story: Reflecting the Symbolism and Values of Our Movement. We honour the enduring legacy of the Kenya Girl Guides Association as a movement that has empowered women for over a century.</p> <p>We acknowledge the values that guide our work, which are dignity, integrity, spirituality, servant leadership and citizenship—values that continue to shape us as we serve the girls.” she pointed out.</p> <p>Other dignitaries who graced the occasion included Nyeri County Commissioner Ronald Mwiwawi, Nyeri Central MP Duncan Maina Mathenge and Kenya Girl Guides National Executive Officer Claire Opiyo, among others.</p> <p>The Scout Movement was started in 1907 by General Baden Powell, while his wife Olave St. Claire founded the Girl Guide Association in 1920.</p> <p>Powell died on January 8, 1941 and was buried in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Nyeri, Kenya.</p> <p>His wife Olave later moved back to England, but after she died in 1977, her ashes were returned to Kenya and interred beside her husband.</p> <p>In 2001, the Kenyan government declared Baden-Powell’s grave a national monument.</p> <p>Today more than 500 million young people and adults have taken part in Scouting since its birth a century ago.</p> <p><strong>By Samuel Maina and Beth Ndirangu</strong></p> <div class="apss-social-share apss-theme-1 clearfix"> <div class="apss-facebook apss-single-icon"> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https://www.kenyanews.go.ke/first-lady-calls-for-collective-efforts-to-empower-girls/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"> <div class="apss-icon-block clearfix"> <i class="fa fa-facebook"></i> <span class="apss-social-text">Share on Facebook</span> <span class="apss-share">Share</span> </div> </a> </div> <div class="apss-twitter apss-single-icon"> <a href="https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=First%20Lady%20calls%20for%20collective%20efforts%20to%20empower%20girls&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.kenyanews.go.ke%2Ffirst-lady-calls-for-collective-efforts-to-empower-girls%2F&amp;" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"> <div class="apss-icon-block clearfix"> <i class="fa fa-twitter"></i> <span class="apss-social-text">Share on Twitter</span><span class="apss-share">Tweet</span> </div> </a> </div> <div class="apss-email apss-single-icon"> <a class="share-email-popup" href='mailto:?subject=Please visit this link https://www.kenyanews.go.ke/first-lady-calls-for-collective-efforts-to-empower-girls/&amp;body=Hey Buddy!, I found this information for you: "First%20Lady%20calls%20for%20collective%20efforts%20to%20empower%20girls". Embu leaders condemn demos that led to destructions <p style="font-weight: 400;">Leaders from Mbeere South Constituency, Embu County, have condemned destruction of property and disruption of businesses that took place during demonstrations on Thursday at Kiritiri Town.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The demos were organised by traders who were protesting what they termed as unfulfilled promises by the County Government in terms of development projects.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">They argued that they have been discriminated against by Governor Cecily Mbarire-led administration in matters of development yet they generate a huge chunk of revenue for the county.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">What started as peaceful demonstrations, turned chaotic prompting anti-riot police to step in to restore order, but were overwhelmed leading to destruction of property including constituency NG-CDF offices and Land Cruiser that were pelted with stones.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The traders however distanced themselves from the chaos, saying their peaceful demonstrations were infiltrated by goons who carried out the destruction with the aim of looting.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Led by Senator Alexander Mundigi, the leaders said though it was their constitutional right to demonstrate, invading and destroying property or disrupting other people’s lives was illegal.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">“The right to demonstrate must be exercised within the boundaries that respects the rights of others,” Senator Mundigi said on Friday when he attended a funeral service in the area.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">He reminded Embu people what transpired during the anti-finance bill protests last year that saw massive destruction of property including the Governor’s offices that were torched and yet to be repaired.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">“We must be careful that we do end up destroying what has taken us years to build in the name of demonstrations,” he said.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">County Assembly Minority Leader and area (Mavuria Ward) MCA Ngari Mbaka admonished the demonstrators for turning a justifiable cause of clamor for development into mayhem.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">He appealed to locals to make use of their elected leaders or representatives to channel their grievances to the relevant authorities instead of resulting in protests that mostly end up turning destructive.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">However, Kiritiri Livestock Wholesalers Chair Joseph Murithi who said their peaceful demonstrations were hijacked by looters insisted that they resulted in protests after the County Government failed to give them a listening ear.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>By Samuel Waititu</strong></p> <div class="apss-social-share apss-theme-1 clearfix"> <div class="apss-facebook apss-single-icon"> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https://www.kenyanews.go.ke/embu-leaders-condemn-demos-that-led-to-destructions/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"> <div class="apss-icon-block clearfix"> <i class="fa fa-facebook"></i> <span class="apss-social-text">Share on Facebook</span> <span class="apss-share">Share</span> </div> </a> </div> <div class="apss-twitter apss-single-icon"> <a href="https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=Embu%20leaders%20condemn%20demos%20that%20led%20to%20destructions&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.kenyanews.go.ke%2Fembu-leaders-condemn-demos-that-led-to-destructions%2F&amp;" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"> <div class="apss-icon-block clearfix"> <i class="fa fa-twitter"></i> <span class="apss-social-text">Share on Twitter</span><span class="apss-share">Tweet</span> </div> </a> </div> <div class="apss-email apss-single-icon"> <a class="share-email-popup" href='mailto:?subject=Please visit this link https://www.kenyanews.go.ke/embu-leaders-condemn-demos-that-led-to-destructions/&amp;body=Hey Buddy!, I found this information for you: "Embu%20leaders%20condemn%20demos%20that%20led%20to%20destructions". Administrator raises alarm over increasing suicide cases in county <p style="font-weight: 400;">Nyeri County Commissioner Ronald Mwiwawi has called for concerted efforts from all residents to help stem increasing suicide cases in the area.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Mwiwawi has warned that unless something is urgently done to address the root cause of suicide in the county, the problem might turn into a social catastrophe.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">He has also noted that the majority of those committing suicide happen to be men who form the most critical cog in the stability of any society.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">“For the three months I have been here, suicide cases have been very many. Suicide has become a thorny issue. I asked those people with mental health issues to walk into my office and let us have a dialogue and understand why are we are taking our lives. Let us talk to one another so that we can reduce the cases of suicide,” said the Commissioner while speaking during the roll out of countywide Social Health Authority (SHA) registration exercise at the Nyeri Town Health Center yesterday.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">During last year’s 61st Jamhuri day celebrations at the Nyeri Kamukunji grounds, Mwiwawi, directed all deputy Commissioners, chiefs and their assistants to organize frequent public barazas in order address rising suicide cases in the county.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">He said he was horrified at the growing number of people who were taking their lives in the county describing the challenge as alarming.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The administrator said it was unacceptable for people to continue taking their lives at such an alarming rate while those in authority do nothing about the issue.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">“I have been in this county for less than a month but what has alarmed me is the number of people who are ending their lives on a daily basis. It is equally disturbing to report that majority of those who are taking their lives are men aged between 60 to 65 years .We must stop this worrying trend and  address the root cause of this problem. In the meantime, I want all chiefs and their assistants to institute public forums with help of village elders and try to see how we can solve the root cause of this problem. We should not keep silent while our people are taking their lives by the day,” he said.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Mwiwawi also raised concern over frequent reports of house fires and livestock theft being reported in the county in recent days.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">He said it was alarming that his office is receiving reports of residents losing their livestock to suspected rustlers and has urged the public to assist the government in tackling the menace.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">“I don’t understand why everyday a house must burn down. I also don’t understand why the practice of stock theft is creeping in this county despite Nyeri not being a bandit prone area,” he noted.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">“I am going to engage with the Fire Brigade to help understand why semi-permanent houses are burning every day. We need to know the cause. We also need to identify those stealing our animals from our homes and report them to security agents in order to nip this vice in the bud.”</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Mwiwawi also termed the SHA registration drive a timely gesture that will greatly help the public get access to quality and affordable health care.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">He said the national health insurance scheme is not alien to the country since it has been undergoing systematic improvements since 1965.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The administrator said the only thing the scheme is trying to do is cure the challenges that have dogged the implementation of previous health insurance schemes.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">“The Social Health Authority is attempting to ensure all Kenyans are covered, are protected and that their dignity is preserved and that they can get quality health service. This is a journey we don’t have a choice but have to walk together. If we have any issues, we only have to make amendments to the current policy,” he stated.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">On his part Governor Dr Mutahi Kahiga who was the chief guest during the event promised his unwavering support in tackling the problem of suicide cases in the county.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">He noted that the problem has remained a thorny issue for some years with the majority of the victims being male.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Dr Kahiga directed the CECM Health Dr Joseph Kiragu to launch mental wellness forums where people can come out and speak out about challenges affecting them and offer psychological therapy to those persons struggling with mental health problems.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">“Mental health is the leading cause for the rising cases of suicide in this county. It’s an issue we have discussed even with my staff. I therefore direct the Health Department to take up this matter and come up with a wellness day where we can have candid discussions on matters affecting our mental health,” he said.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>By Samuel Maina</strong></p> <div class="apss-social-share apss-theme-1 clearfix"> <div class="apss-facebook apss-single-icon"> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https://www.kenyanews.go.ke/administrator-raises-alarm-over-increasing-suicide-cases-in-county/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"> <div class="apss-icon-block clearfix"> <i class="fa fa-facebook"></i> <span class="apss-social-text">Share on Facebook</span> <span class="apss-share">Share</span> </div> </a> </div> <div class="apss-twitter apss-single-icon"> <a href="https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=Administrator%20raises%20alarm%20over%20increasing%20suicide%C2%A0cases%20in%20county&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.kenyanews.go.ke%2Fadministrator-raises-alarm-over-increasing-suicide-cases-in-county%2F&amp;" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"> <div class="apss-icon-block clearfix"> <i class="fa fa-twitter"></i> <span class="apss-social-text">Share on Twitter</span><span class="apss-share">Tweet</span> </div> </a> </div> <div class="apss-email apss-single-icon"> <a class="share-email-popup" href='mailto:?subject=Please visit this link https://www.kenyanews.go.ke/administrator-raises-alarm-over-increasing-suicide-cases-in-county/&amp;body=Hey Buddy!, I found this information for you: "Administrator%20raises%20alarm%20over%20increasing%20suicide%C2%A0cases%20in%20county".
