Autism awareness month sensitization begins in Kiambu The Department of Health Services in Kiambu kicked off a month-long celebration of World Autism Awareness by holding a sensitization walk from Ndumberi stadium to Kiambu Community Social Hall. The event themed around autism awareness and acceptance is aimed at promoting understanding and support for people on the autism spectrum. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) encompasses a diverse range of developmental conditions. Key characteristics include varying degrees of challenges with social interaction and communication that could impact an individual’s interpersonal relationships, communication style, learning process and behaviours. Speaking during the event, County Health Director Dr. Hillary Kagwa pledged to strengthen county-level government support for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. “The high costs of autism care and management present a major challenge for numerous families and unfortunately, the stigma perpetuated by society has led others to conceal their children, depriving them of a life of dignity,” he said. “The increasing incidence of autism, both in Kenya and globally, necessitates immediate action. We are committed to working together to create positive change. Therefore, I propose the development of a national autism policy to ensure children with this condition have improved life outcomes, and I urge the government to treat this with the importance it deserves,” stated Dr. Kagwa. He acknowledged the significant challenges caregivers faced in raising children with disabilities and emphasized that the event offered a valuable forum for sharing information, ideas, and support among individuals with autism and their families. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates the global prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to be approximately 1 in 68 children. However, the Autism Society of Kenya (ASK), a parent-led organization, suggests a potentially higher prevalence within Kenya, estimating it to be as high as 4%, or 1 in 25 children. Free health services were offered in conjunction with the walk, encompassing community eye and dental screenings, blood pressure and hypertension checks, mental health support, and SHA registration. **By Hellen Lunalo** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

ICT Ministry Announces 10-Week Cybergame Competition To boost national cybersecurity capabilities, the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, in partnership with the Slovakian Ministry of Interior and National Administration, will host Kenya Cyber Game 2025, a 10-week initiative meant to identify and nurture promising cybersecurity professionals. The Kenya Cyber Game was launched by ICT Principal Secretary John Tanui and Slovakian Ambassador Katarina Zuffa Leligdonova on Tuesday, April 1. Principal Secretary Tanui explained that the Kenya Cyber Game, with the theme “Unlocking Your Cybersecurity Potential” is scheduled to continue until June 9, 2025, and is primarily aimed at participants from tertiary institutions and those working in the cybersecurity industry. “The goal of this competition is to offer university students, tertiary learners, and professionals a chance to test and improve their cybersecurity abilities,” he stated. To participate, individuals must register online through the player interface. Prize eligibility is limited to Kenyan citizens; however, non-citizens are welcome to participate without competing for prizes. The Ministry has specified that participation in the game is free of charge, and a new cybersecurity challenge, encompassing a variety of categories such as malware analysis, digital forensics, cryptography, open-source intelligence, offensive security, and security governance and processes, will be released on a weekly basis. The awards, encompassing tech gadgets, cybersecurity training, software licenses, and tech store vouchers, will be distributed across distinct categories: students, the junior category, and participants from the public and private sectors. Furthermore, those participants who demonstrate exceptional performance in the game and satisfy the specified age criteria will be eligible for consideration to join the National Cybersecurity team, which represents Kenya in regional and international cybersecurity competitions. According to a recent Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) report, cyber threats in the country increased by 27.2% in the second quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year. The Communications Authority of Kenya’s (CAK) report indicated that Kenya’s technology ecosystem experienced 840 million cyber threats during the period of October to December 2024. The report further specified that system vulnerabilities were the most common threat vector, accounting for 752.4 million of the detected threats. **By Hellen Lunalo** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

KALRO unveils drought- and blight-tolerant potato variety to boost productivity The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) has introduced a game changing potato variety, Clone IG-70, that promises to revolutionize potato farming in Kenya. The new variety, which is drought- and blight-tolerant, was unveiled last Friday during the Mkulima Open Week Exhibitions at the KALRO Potato Research Centre in Tigoni, Limuru Sub-county. KALRO has been at the forefront of developing high-yielding, disease-resistant potato varieties, while adopting innovative farming methods, including improved post-harvest techniques, to enhance productivity. “Certified seeds play a crucial role in enhancing potato productivity, and the KALRO Research Open Week aims to educate farmers on advanced technologies and best practices to meet the country’s growing potato demand,” said Robert Musyoki, the Director of KALRO Seeds. Musyoki revealed that Clone IG-70 was in its final verification stages and would soon be available to farmers and emphasized that educating farmers on certified seeds, would help bridge the gap in seed shortages and improve yields. “There is a high demand for certified seeds in the country, but low production capacity has made it difficult to meet this demand. We invite all potential stakeholders to join us in increasing seed production to support the growing number of farmers,” he added. According to Centre Director of the KALRO Horticulture Research Centre, Tigoni, Moses Nyongesa, farmers have long sought a potato variety that is both resistant to blight and capable of delivering high yields. “The new variety meets this need, offering a high yield of 320 bags per acre, drought and blight tolerance, and excellent processing qualities, making it an ideal choice for potato farming,” Nyongesa stated. To address the certified seed shortage, KALRO has introduced an innovative approach known as potato rooted apical cuttings technology, which enhances the production of early-generation seeds. “This technology allows farmers to purchase potato seedlings in addition to seeds, enabling faster seed multiplication. It can also be applied to other crops like tomatoes, further boosting agricultural productivity,” Nyongesa added. Research scientist, Faida Kelele John, noted that 80 percent of local farmers relied on uncertified seeds, which makes pest and disease control more challenging. “Certified seeds undergo rigorous evaluation, curing, and analysis to meet required standards, making them more reliable than exchanging seeds among farmers. The Clone IG-70 variety stands out for its high resistance to blight and drought, large tuber size, and suitability for making fresh potato chips and roasting,” Kelele explained. Farmers who attended the exhibition praised the new developments, however, raised concerns over seed accessibility and cost. Peter Magina, a potato farmer from Limuru, acknowledged that advanced seed technology has boosted yields and profitability, but called on the government to increase funding for KALRO to enhance seed production. “Each farmer is receiving a maximum of two 50kg bags of potato seeds, which is insufficient for those with large plots of land. I urge the government to allocate more funds to KALRO to ensure increased seed production,” Magina said. Rose Wathira, a farmer from Narok, highlighted the high cost of the seeds, urging the government to subsidize prices to make them more affordable. “The seeds are expensive, with each bag costing Sh4,250. I urge the government to reduce the price to make them more accessible to farmers,” she appealed. The KALRO Mkulima Open Week, which has been running for nearly a month at various KALRO research stations across the country, has drawn hundreds of farmers eager to explore the latest agricultural innovations and improve their farming practices. **By John Kariba** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

400 acres of Gathioro forest targeted for rehabilitation The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) intends to rehabilitate 400 acres of Gathioro forest, devastated by wildfires early this year. Nyeri County Forest Conservator Esther Mugo says they plan to replenish the affected areas with indigenous trees as part of KFS efforts to increase forest cover around the Mount Kenya forest circuit. Mugo has also urged members of the public to desist from igniting controlled fires in their farms, saying the practice is to blame for the frequent fires that are often reported in forested areas during the dry season. “Parts of Gathioro forest station that got burnt within the Mount Kenya region and around 400 acres got burnt, translating to about 160 hectares. This area was covered by grass and some shrubs, and no trees were touched. In this area we expect to plant indigenous trees and expect that in the ongoing rains the whole area will be under tree cover. Within Aberdare we also had a fire, where an area of around 200 acres was burnt. This area was within the moorland, so no trees were touched there. Within the moorland we don’t do any planting because it is only grass that is there, which we expect to regenerate once it rains,” she told KNA. The conservator disclosed that KFS has entered into a partnership with other stakeholders, including Community Forests Associations (CFAs), National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) and non-governmental organisations, to undertake rehabilitation activities in all the protected forests during the ongoing long rain seasons. In addition, KFS has roped in the Nyeri County government in developing and managing forest resources on community and private lands, as part of environmental conservation efforts. The efforts are part of the government goal of increasing the country’s forest cover to 30 per cent by 2032 by planting 15 billion seedlings. Forest cover and tree cover in Nyeri currently stand at 40.17 per cent and 45.89 per cent, respectively, according to the National Forest Resources Assessment Report of 2021, with Mount Kenya and Aberdares forming the main water towers in the county. “Nyeri County has over 3,000,000 plantable seedlings, both indigenous and exotic, which are expected to be planted out by the end of the ongoing rainy season. Over 500 hectares in state forests will be regenerated both for industrial forest plantation and rehabilitation purposes. Tree growing and management in farmlands and degraded areas should be emphasised to contribute to the achievement of the targets as well as assist in controlling desertification and improvement of livelihoods,” she added. Nyeri is one of the six County Conservation areas found within the Central Highlands Regional Conservation Area. The total gazetted forest area in the County stands at 115,435.14 hectares, with Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges forming the two major forest ecosystems. Mount Kenya forest ecosystem has seven forest stations that cover a total of 64,470.92 hectares. They include Nanyuki, Gathiuru, Naromoru, Kabaru, Hombe, Ragati and Chehe. The Aberdare ecosystem has five forest stations covering an area of 50,964.22, including Muringato, Kabaru, Hombe, Zaina, Kiandongoro and Zuti. **By Samuel Maina** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

Governor Wamatangi launches state of the art medical equipment Kiambu County Governor Dr. Kimani Wamatangi has launched a new set of state-of-the-art medical equipment, including digital X-ray machines, advanced ultrasound systems, and life-saving dialysis machines. The launch, held in Thika on Tuesday, marks a significant milestone in the county’s ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare services. The new medical machines will be installed in hospitals across Kiambu, including facilities in Githunguri, Thika, Lari, Nyathuna, Lusigetti, Gachororo (Juja), Makongeni (Thika), and Lang’ata (Githurai). Additionally, dialysis and endoscopy machines have been introduced in Karuri, Tigoni, Igegania, Kigumo (Komothai), Kahara, Ruiru, Thika, and Kiambu hospitals over the past 18 months. “My administration will spend Sh2.5 billion on equipping our health facilities. Sh 500 million will go towards renewing equipment in existing facilities, while Sh2 billion will be used to equip six new Level Four and 26 Level Three hospitals currently under construction,” said Governor Wamatangi. The governor emphasized that his administration has completed the expansion and refurbishment of hospitals where the new digital X-ray machines will replace outdated equipment that previously lacked capacity. Kiambu County is now among the few that have these digital X-ray machines. The technology can assess kidney function, evaluate the uterus to monitor fetal health, and facilitate early treatment when necessary. It can also assess the pancreas and help detect prostate cancer, ensuring that even the boy child is not left behind in receiving crucial medical interventions. Wamatangi also announced that the Kikuyu (Thogoto) Level Four Hospital in Kikuyu Sub-County is now 95 percent complete. The 160-bed facility, whose construction began in 2016 but stalled for over seven years, was revived in 2023. Once completed, it will be one of the six Level Four and 26 Level Three hospitals aimed at increasing healthcare access in Kiambu. For Mary Muthoni, a resident of Ruiru who has been undergoing dialysis treatment, the launch of the new dialysis machines at Ruiru Hospital is life-changing. “I have been traveling long distances for my dialysis sessions, which has been both exhausting and expensive. Knowing that I can now receive treatment closer to home is a huge relief,” she said with a smile. “This machine is not just a piece of equipment; it’s a lifeline for people like me.” The impact of these investments is already being felt across the county. Patients who previously had to travel to Nairobi or other distant locations for specialized treatments can now access these services locally. This has not only reduced the financial burden on families but has also eased the strain on overcrowded referral hospitals. Governor Wamatangi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing healthcare, stating, “Our goal is to make Kiambu County a model for healthcare delivery in Kenya. By equipping our hospitals with modern machines and expanding our facilities, we are not only saving lives but also improving the quality of life for our people.” As Kiambu County continues to roll out its healthcare improvement program, stories like Mary’s serve as a reminder of the transformative power of accessible and efficient medical services. **By Natasha Lelenguya and Yvonne Wangeci** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

Wamatangi unveils free cabro training for Kiambu youth Kiambu County Governor Dr. Kimani Wamatangi has launched a free cabro-making training programme for youth in Ruiru Sub-County to equip them with practical skills and combat unemployment. The initiative was announced during the opening of the twin workshop at Ruiru Vocational Training Centre in Biashara Ward early this week. Dr. Wamatangi emphasised that the programme will help young people gain essential skills to secure employment and improve their livelihoods. Subsequently, a cabro-making shed has been constructed and is nearing completion. Once fully equipped, it will serve as a training hub, preparing youths for the job market. “Our youths will earn a daily income once they acquire cabro-making skills, allowing them to support themselves and their families,” Dr. Wamatangi said. The governor highlighted the growing demand for cabro blocks due to ongoing road construction projects in the county. Training local youth will provide them with employment opportunities while contributing to infrastructural development. The programme is expected to create jobs for at least 300 young people. Beyond training, Dr. Wamatangi assured participants they would receive cabro-making machines after completing the programme, encouraging them to start their own businesses. “We want to ensure our young people do not return to unemployment. Instead, they should use the skills and equipment provided to become self-reliant,” he added. Local leaders and residents welcomed the initiative as a strategic move to address youth unemployment and promote vocational training. Biashara Ward MCA, Kimani Nduta, urged youth to embrace hard work and unity, pledging his support to help them become productive members of society. The initiative aligns with Kiambu County’s broader efforts to promote technical and vocational education as a pathway to economic empowerment. Meanwhile, as infrastructure projects expand, the need for skilled local labour grows, ensuring employment opportunities for trained youths. **By Joyrita Nyambura** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail
