PSA #Wellington and #nziff friends. The wonderful Guillermo del Toros #frankenstein is out in a frustratingly small number of screenings around the city through this weekend.
So it you want to see it in a cinema — and you should — get in before they all sell out.
I liked the concept of Notes from a Fish: Leroy has writer's block until a fish inspires him, even a madcap adventure to find said fish when it goes missing, but think the story was overwhelmed by fish(y) investigator Charlie's employment issues.

Another Film Festival, always the highlight of the Wellington winter! My top 5:
1. The Ballad of Wallis Island
2. Werckmeister Harmonies
3. Nouvelle Vague
4. Prime Minister
5. It Was Just An Accident

I really loved Sorry, Baby at #NZIFF - it's not really about the rather cliched bad thing that happened to Agnes, more about how she triumphs over it, has a kind of victory. The movie is much funnier than I expected it to be.

Going to see Dame Robin White at a Q& a tomorrow. Movie screening 4pm Oamaru. Was in the recent #NZIFF but i missed it so good to have another chance to view & with the artist herself

Another #NZIFF movie - The Ballad of Wallis Island, set on a remote Welsh Island. A lonely, obsessive fan wants to get his favourite band back together so invites its members over, seperately. This has mixed results - funny and sad.

last night i finished my #nziff experience with a screening of HARD BOILED and it was so goddamn fun. the theatre was pretty full, there were a lot of laughs and oohs and aahs, the crowd did that weird applause thing as the credits rolled, my partner seemed to have a blast. man it was lovely.
I saw French movie A Little Something Extra, about two jewel thiefs taking refuge with a group of people with disabilties at #NZIFF - it's a lot of fun and heartwarming.

Last day for Ōtepoti on Monday and one extra late addition for music fans. I’d like to but sadly not going to get there. Jeff Buckley #NZIFF

did you know the #NZIFF is still on? i'm heading along to HAPPYEND this evening, should be cool. looking forward to hard boiled 4K on Sunday too! films films films films!
Whether you like the style of this film or not this beautiful human shines through. #ItsNeverOver,JeffBuckley was of course an emotional final #nziff film.
Someone put lots of onions in our row at the Massey Cinema (so awesome having a new great sounding Atmos room in Wellington too btw!)
Gaylene’s #GraceAprayerForPeace just knocked my damn socks off. So glad I caught an #nziff encore screening.
Such an elegantly made work - with space to walk alongside work, and making of it, Hone destroying me all over, so many moving homecomings. This sensational doco IS art.

The proud tradition #nziff has with Jafar Panahi continues—I think Bill’d be happy #ItWasJustAnAccident won the Palme d’Or this year.
Very much on the page - moving from farce to pure dread by the film’s finale, and and a conclusion crafted in our own minds by our own ears.

My #nziff highlights were the Dag Johan Haugerud Oslo Stories films (no surprise there I know), Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value, and Jin Ong's Abang Adik.
LOVED having lots of good Sundance content and there was diversity of view and origin especially asian was v cool.
Ngā Whanaunga was super!
My #nziff lowlights were a programme that sometimes only had one screening and the short programme duration. Would be really great to have better negotiation for screenings again, and more films. Felt like lots of just in time this year.
Nearly everything I saw in #nziff was good to great but the best new films were:
1 – Resurrection
2 – Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk
3 – The Secret Agent
4 – Brand New Landscape
5 – Crocodile Tears
#nziff closer #SentimentalValue is just so good.
Quietly effective reflecting on self, family & the healing power of cinema. So much longing in the silences. Such exquisite selection of light as a physical object in the house. The house. The humour and the pain. And love.
#2wr love mercifully
My completed #nziff watchlist:
Werckmeister Harmonies
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (restoration)
Eddington
Resurrection
The Shrouds
It Was Just an Accident
The Mastermind
Angel's Egg
Maya, Give Me a Title
Young Mothers
Not too shabby!!!
#nziff archival doco #IsraelPalistineSwedistTV1958to1989 was essential fare and does not feel like it’s nearly 4 hour runtime. Indeed its length is essential.
The additional context of Swedish television’s reportage is a deftly selected and edited additional lens.

cinema again at the #nziff in ōtepoti. the sound of falling which people keep referring to as "the German film" but which i am thinking of as "the dark ambiance of hetitage" film. well let's see how I feel in 142 mins 🎞
Just watched 6 NZ new short films. They were all outstanding. #NZIFF
Sound design especially. My two faves in this group were Stage Challenge & Lets Settle This because they had more spoken dialogue but all films were exceptional. Take a bow filmmakers. #filmsky

I loved Eddington, laughed all the way thru at being reminded of the brain-brokenness of Murkkka from 2020 onwards. Being in NZ, I suspect those around me just considered it a documentary. For me, 4 for 4 for Aster, and damn the critics. #nziff
Raul Pecks films are always stunning constructed - true of #Orwell2+2=5 in #nziff
I really think everyone should read Wifedom: Mrs. Orwells invisible life to expand on this story - it does nothing to diminish the work.
#2wr perpetually prescient
I saw Bi Gan's #Resurrection at #NZIFF - while I enjoyed individual components of the movie, I don't think much of the whole: it struck me as being several independent pieces stiched together with a narrative that didn't land.

#nziff was in party mode for #LesbianSpacePrincess a total romp - delightful, corny as all hell, and all the better for it.
She’s a lesbian !
She’s in space !
She’s a princess !
Oh… and she’s also very sad…
I suspect this is a cult film made.
#2wr Tiny Phonetastix
Great debut #CactusPears did that quiet honest first film thing with a slow burning and really rather well structured script not so much about self-discovery but revelation and the constraints of tradition, class, and family. A #nziff pleasure to watch a slice of India less seen
