culturally connected oases After 333 features in the format started in 2011, it is getting harder to find an issue / field that I haven't covered yet, but oases in the desert were one, until now. (I think I did something on the island biogeography of sea floor "oases" at one point.) A new paper attempting to compile a global atlas of oases provided the inspiration to plug this gap. My own experience of desert oases is limited to a visit to Algeria back in the last century, including a stay at El Oued, an oasis town in the Sahara. Thus I learned a lot about the amazing cultural history of oases around the globe, which have supported all kinds of travel routes including the Silk Road.
