Yet when a movement in Ireland called for boycotting slave-produced sugar in the 1830s-40s, #DanielOConnell was opposed as it would interfere with free trade.
And while his work may have helped lead to Irish independence, O’Connell himself remained a monarchist & supporter of the Empire

A great privilege to have attended the State Commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Daniel O'Connell at his home at Derrynane today.

A fitting tribute and celebration of a giant of a man whose politics and message are as powerful and relevant today as they ever were.

#DanielOConnell was contradictory, & is often criticised for being “too parliamentary” & too deferential to the Empire.
He was also perhaps the most prominent anti- #slavery voice of his day in Europe:
"As human, as accountable beings, why should we suffer this any longer?"
