On this day, April 6th, in 1910, Milwaukee elected Emil Seidel as its mayor as well as a majority socialist common council. This was the first time a Socialist was elected mayor in any major U.S. city as well as the only time socialists held a majority of the common council, marking the peak of socialist power in the city.

This victory came after years of organizing and having very lackluster showings in elections (they won only 2,400 votes out of a total of 46,000 cast in their first election in 1897). This election also proved that socialists could organize outside German communities where their original strength had been. The Sewer Socialists even won over a significant amount of Polish voters, a community that had historically been resistant to their revolutionary ideals.

The Sewer Socialists diligently made the most of their short time in power to vastly improve the quality of life for working class Milwaukeeans with reforms such as municipalized public utilities, increased benefits for city workers and expanded education classes for children and adults. They pioneered several items on the leftist agenda, like public housing and worker’s compensation programs.

Seidel’s mayoral triumph opened the floodgates of Sewer Socialism in Milwaukee, serving as the first of three Socialist mayors in Milwaukee during the 20th century. Seidel set a precedent that we’re working hard to bring back to our city today!

This cartoon from 1910 celebrates Seidel's victory, which he achieved largely by promising to clean up corruption in the city.

On this day, April 6th, in 1936, Time Magazine featured then Milwaukee mayor Daniel Hoan on its cover, along with an extensive profile. While the article decried Socialism in local politics, it also illustrated how much Milwaukee had improved under Hoan’s tenure and described him as “...one of the nation’s ablest public servants, and under him Milwaukee has become perhaps the best-governed city in the U.S.”

Published just one week before the 1936 election, the Time article gave Daniel Hoan, (who went on to win the election) and the Socialist cause a big boost of attention.
