dear non-Patronizers: February's "See the Sausage Being Made" is now public. mwl.io/archives/24612
includes a reveal of the #openzfsmastery cover painting!
"They cranked the OpenZFS version up to 5000, leaving Oracle plenty of space to add new version numbers--as if Oracle would EVER innovate rather than merely exploit acquired intellectual property." #nonotryagain #openzfsmastery
Ground out some words on #openzfsmastery today, discussing lopsided pools and self-healing. Also got tomorrow's #60SecondsOfWIP recorded!
I'd appreciate your help keeping the lights on while I finish this book. sponsor.mwl.io
I should replace this whole section with "make sure your filesystem blocks align with your disk's physical sectors or ZFS will GUT YOU LIKE THE SQUEALING PIGLET YOU ARE." #openzfsmastery
Today in #openzfsmastery: re-re-redrafted the section on block size, then discussed ashift autodetection, stripes, and mirrors.

I got to use the word "pernicious" today, yay! #openzfsmastery
I freely concede that this is a threat model not covered in #openzfsmastery

Today's #60SecondsOfWIP is out! "A Special Uberblock."

"The problem is, again, disks are lying liars that lie." #openzfsmastery
This sentence is the core of my tech author career.
Are disks with 512-byte physical sectors still a thing?
As 4k disks were first escaping, 512b disks were purported to have better performance for certain applications. I'm pretty sure that all new disks that claim 512b are actually 4k? #sysadmin
I'm thinking #openzfsmastery doesn't need ashift...
A page and a half of blue text on a computer monitor. Five words of white text.
"Write a second edition! It'll be easy, just update the text for the changes and slam it out."
Tracking changes is easy. The white text is unchanged. The blue text is new.
I would appreciate your help keeping the rats fed as I write #openzfsmastery sponsor.mwl.io
Today in #openzfsmastery:
"A message like “compatibility says this pool cannot be upgraded further” might be more explicit, but would also be less polite."
I'd appreciate your help keeping the lights on while I write this silly book. sponsor.mwl.io
"We assume that your disk hardware is identical within each pool: if your mirror has one NVMe and one iSCSI disk, our advice is worthless and so is your pool." #openzfsmastery #nonotryagain
Starting on the VDEV chapter of #openzfsmastery.
"Losing one VDEV destroys the pool, so choose your redundancy level wisely."
Next paragraph: "Losing one VDEV destroys your pool."
Next: "Losing even one VDEV..."
I have no idea why people pay me for this, but I do appreciate it.

"The important thing is that you pick one naming scheme and stick with it, treating violations like a 1980s evangelical discovering their child's secret Dungeons & Dragons stash." #nonotryagain #openzfsmastery
That's a wrap on the disks chapter. I'd appreciate your backing as I write this book.
Okay, that's the #freebsd disks section of #openzfsmastery done. Partitions, GPT labels, etc.
Tomorrow, #debian!

Today in #openzfsmastery:
"GEOM lets you get clever with your storage. Don’t be clever. Put your ZFS on top of a partition and leave it the hell alone." #nonotryagain

"Advance planning makes outages much less traumatic. We highly recommend it."

"Write a new ZFS book that covers the updates since 2014, and adds Linux! How bad could it be?" #openzfsmastery

Today is #openzfsmastery, a footnote:
"Once upon a time the phone company printed huge books that listed everyone with a phone and their phone number. Phone numbers didn’t change because they were all landlines. But then the dinosaurs knocked the phone lines down, so we went cellular."
Today in #openzfsmastery:
"ZFS can run on anything that the operating system thinks looks like a disk. Memory disks? Uh… presumably you have a reason for wanting a robust ephemeral filesystem, but fine, I guess?"
You can sponsor this beast: sponsor.mwl.io
installing openZFS on a debian VM, and amusing myself by watching the difference between the host's resource usage and the VM's. #sysadmin
Going to ZFS snapshot the installed working VM and use clones for destructive testing. #freebsd #bhyve #openzfsmastery
Wherein I actually solicit opinions from my tech book readers for #openzfsmastery.

That's chapter 1 of #openzfsmastery off to Allan for review and some tax forms gathered. calling it a day.
that's some #openzfsmastery written and tomorrow's #60SecondsOfWIP recorded.
Calling it a day.
