My most recent poetry collection is called 'The Usual Apologies' because I always say sorry for inflicting my writing on other people. I really loved the short story Frank (no ghosts, one alien), recently published by Extra Teeth, because they did such a fantastic job of editing it. Overboard is bloody great because the Acid Bath publishing team of copy editors and proof readers have excelled themselves. (No aliens at all.)

Ocean holiday camps. Yet there is still something oldfashioned and glamorous about the idea, especially on a smaller ship, where some regulars remember the glory days of black tie and tails. So there is a tension between past and present, the reality and the dream - jolly holidaying for guests contrasting with the underlying (often invisible) hard work of staff a long way from home. I asked one guy cleaning stairs if he was ok, and he answered 'I am sad, lonely and very tired, madam'. I remember his face and name but not those of any of the passengers from that trip. Am I a bad person? A hypocrite. I still fancy another cruise. Whether I would write another book about it I don't know.

3. My favourite genre to write is kitchen sink with a vague supernatural tint. I wish I had the brain to write murder mysteries. Maybe I shall go on another long cruise and set myself the task of writing an Agatha Christie style novel. It'll probably end up with a ghost in it, though.

At the moment I am reading Martha Wells for fantasy/sci fi and Tom Cox for folk weirdness. Any genre is great if it gives its writers and readers joy. I'll happily read anything from Shakespeare to Terry Pratchett, but I do like a 1930s murder mystery, for the escape to another time and satisfying puzzle-solving.
