Sunset in the Painted Desert. It was late evening in the Painted Desert, inside Petrified Forest National Park. I needed a place to sleep, but there was no established campground. A ranger suggested I head deeper into the park — at least an hour from the nearest road — where wild camping is allowed. I hiked out with my gear and found a quiet spot just in time to pitch my tent before sunset. The desert lit up in shades of red, orange, and purple. I was alone, surrounded by silence and color.
