🦕 Miragaia (~150 Ma)
Discovered in Portugal, this herbivorous dinosaur lived during the Late Jurassic. Its name means “Goddess of the Earth.”
🐧 Great Auk (19th century)
Hunted for its meat, the species went extinct. It lived in the North Atlantic.

Top : The 3 species known of Melanocyrillium (a possible ameba), showing the variations around the urn-shaped body theme : - M.hexodiadema with its hexagonal top - M.horodyskii, the widdest cell of the 3 species - M.fimbriatus, the finnest of the 3 species Bottom left : Archaeomarasmius, a small mushroom looking like the extant Marasmius. Bottom right : Diskagama buttonii, a small organism shaped like an urn connected with a stem-like structure with other urn-like shapes
And to end this, this #paleoctober2025 's novelty : non-animal & non-plant organisms !!🦠 We welcomed to the list the mushroom Archaeomarasmius, the (maybe) ameba Melanocyrillium and the "dunno what this is" Diskagma, an organism that could be one of the first non-aquatic lifeforms in Earth history !

A month of #paleoctober2025 has ended, and what a month ! For 31 days we discovered so many incredible extinct organisms, all of them belonging to the tree of life started on our planet 4-ish billion years ago, so let's go for a little recap through the tree formed during this year's paleoctober !⬇️
#Paleoctober2025 Day 31
Diskagma
#Paleoctober2025 Day 30
Miragaia
a digital sketch of an urn shaped organism - text reads - 'paleoctober day 31, diskagma#-'
day 31 of #paleoctober2025 is diskagma, a mystery fossil discovered in 2013. very little is known about these tiny urn shaped little guys - but they have been dated to be 2.2 billion years old, older than any plant!
#paleoart

Fossils of Diskagma buttonii
#paleoctober2025 day 31, the last entry of the month : Diskagma buttonii !
We end the challenge with the oldest of the list ! This enigmatic eukaryote may be the oldest terrestrial life known, throwing the first water-land transitions way back into the precambrian, way before plants and animals !
Un guépard américain ressemblant à son homologue moderne.
Proche parent de nos mollusques actuels. Sa coquille est lisse, marquée seulement par ses lignes de croissance.
Day 29 of #Paleoctober2025
🐆 Miracinonyx (~12,000 years ago)
An American cheetah, resembling its modern counterpart.
🐌 Bellerophon (~430 Ma)
A close relative of modern mollusks. The external surface is smooth, ornamented only by growth lines.

#Paleoctober2025 Day 29
Bellerophon sp.
Sketch of the small Cambrian arthropod in murky water with particles floating around it. It has one large compound eye.
Sketch of the synapsid resting on the dirt.
Sketch of the grapolites floating above the ocean floor.
Catching up #Paleoctober2025 days 25, 26, 27 with paleoart sketches of Cambropachycope, Sphenacodon, and Cyrtograptus.

a greyscale sketch of a long necked dinosaur traversing a landscape with their baby - text reads 'paleoctober day 30, miragaia'
day 30 of #paleoctober2025 is miragaia, a long-necked stegosaurid dinosaur
Day 28 of #Paleoctober2025
🐍 Wonambi (~2 Ma)
An Australian snake of the Pleistocene. Mapping the species revealed it corresponds to the sacred Wagyl sites: the protector of Nature!
🦜 Agapornis longipes (~2.5 Ma)
A lovebird that lived in Africa. It fed on the ground.

A skeletal reconstruction of Miragaia longicollum, showing the absurd lenght of the neck
#paleoctober2025 day 30 : Miragaia longicollum !
Yes, it's a stegosaurian, not a sauropod. Miragaia is kinda special in its group for having at least 17 vertebrae in its neck, making it a really long-necked animal, even for stegosaurians.
it's a close relative of Dacentrurus & Alcovasaurus.
a digital, watercolour style drawing of a mollusc on the ocean floor
day 29 of #paleoctober2025 is bellerophon sp. a genus of extinct marine mollusc 🐌
A drawing of Bellerophon, a snail-like mollusk with a large horn-shaped shell
Fossilized shell of Bellerophon umbilicalis
#paleoctober2025 day 29 : Bellerophon !
Named after an ancient greek hero, this mollusk is a possible close relative of gastropods such as snails, slugs, nudibranchs and limpets. Numerous fossils of this animal have been found across paleozoic rocks but it's sometimes kind of a wastebasket taxon.
Day 27 of #Paleoctober2025
🐬 Hemisintrachelus (~25 Ma)
A whale-dolphin from the Late Oligocene.
🌀 Cyrtograptus grayianus (~440 Ma)
A marine worm-like organism related to echinoderms. It was discovered by Elizabeth Gray, a pioneering woman in paleontology.

#Paleoctober2025 Day 28
Agapornis longipes
a digital sketch of two lovebirds on a watercolour background
day 28 of #paleoctober2025 is agapornis longipes - an extinct species of lovebird that lived in what is now gauteng, south africa during the early pleistocene epoch 🦜
#paleoart
A drawing of of a flying Agapornis longipes, an extinct parrot also called the "long-legged lovebird". These birds are often bright green with a red spot on the head.
Fossil remains of Agapornis longipes from the foot and wing
#paleoctober2025 day 28 : Agapornis longipes !
Lovebirds are little parrots native from Africa well known for their strong pairbonding, and here's an extinct one ! This cutie lived in the Cradle of Humankind in the north of South Africa during the early pleistocene.
Un immense oiseau non volant carnivore. Il mesurait 3 m de haut et avait un crâne de 70 cm.
Proche parent du Dimétrodon, il vivait au Permien inférieur.
Day 26 of #Paleoctober2025
🐣 Kelenken (~15 Ma)
A gigantic flightless carnivorous bird. It stood about 3 meters tall and had a skull 70 cm long.
🐊 Sphenacodon (~300 Ma)
A close relative of Dimetrodon, it lived during the Early Permian.
#SciArt #Paleoart #art #reptile

day 27 of #paleoctober2025 is cyrtograptus, marine organisms related to modern day echinoderms such as starfish and sea urchins 🪸
A drawing of a colony of Cyrtograptus, small worms living together in a spiraling structure
A fossil of Cyrtograptus canadensis, showing the spiral shape of the colony
#paleoctober2025 day 27 : Cyrtograptus !
Graptolites were marine colonial worms related to echinoderms (yes it's not one animal but many), and species such as these were major components of paleozoic food webs. They are especially abundant during the Ordovician and Silurian periods.
#Paleoctober2025 Day 27
Cyrtograptus
a digital drawing of a synapsid sleeping in a sunbeam
day 26 of #paleoctober2025 is sphenacodon - a carnivorous synapsid
