Paul Gilbert – Keep Your Feet Firm And Even Vandaag is _WROC_ verschenen, het eerste vocale soloalbum van Paul Gilbert sinds _I Can Destroy_ uit 2016. Zoals eerder gemeld zijn de teksten gebaseerd op Washington’s Rules Of _Civility and Decent Behaviour In Company and Conversation_, de etiquetteregels die George Washington ooit publiceerde. (En een paar die door AI verzonnen werden.) Zoals Gilbert in de liner notes schrijft:” _Some rock musicians ride motorcycles, consume mind-altering substances, have rebellious spirits, get in fights, have dramatic relationships, or just have an unstoppable desire to tear the roof off the place. The subjects tend to feel good when sung about in a rock song. But those things don’t occur often in my life._ ” Anderzijds levert dat dus wel opmerkelijke teksten op, zoals op dit album, maar ook bijvoorbeeld in “Everybody Use Your Goddamn Turn Signal” op _I Can Destroy_. En natuurlijk is er die keer dat hij teksten bedacht om die vervolgens in de albumversie weg te laten.

Paul Gilbert – Technical Difficulties Mr. Big was commercieel succesvol, maar van Paul Gilberts andere bandje Racer X kon je dat niet zeggen. Logisch, want ook al ging hij shredsolo’s bij Mr. Big niet uit de weg, de songs bij Racer X waren continu shredden. Na twee studioalbums maakte Gilbert de overstap naar Mr. Big. Rond de eeuwwisseling kwam Racer X weer bij elkaar en kwam er nog een drietal albums bij. Het eerste album na de reünie heette heel passend _Technical Difficulties_.

Paul Gilbert – Conscience Is The Most Certain Judge De teksten op het nieuwe album _WROC_ zijn gebaseerd op etiquette-regels die ooit door George Washington zijn bedacht en gepubliceerd als _Washington’s Rules of Civility_. Nou ja, niet allemaal. Gilbert zocht de regels van Washington namelijk op met AI en zoals gebruikelijk had AI er overtuigende onzin bijverzonnen. Tegen de tijd dat Gilbert dat doorkreeg had hij al songs geschreven die geen fluit met Washington te maken hadden. Twee ervan, waaronder “Conscience Is The Most Certain Judge”, staan op het album. _WROC_ verschijnt op 27 februari.

Paul Gilbert – Go Not Thither Bij het nogal tegenvallende _The Dio Album_ verzuchtte ik al dat het tijd werd dat Gilbert weer eens een album mét zang zou maken. En ziedaar: de eerste track van het nieuwe album bevat inderdaad zang. Het album gaat _WROC_ heten en verschijnt op 27 februari. Op de drums: Nick D’Virgilio. Blijkbaar is diens invalbeurt bij Mr. Big goed bevallen. De twee anderen zijn wat minder bekend, maar zoals gebruikelijk bij Gilbert’s soloalbums ook mensen met een serieus cv. Gitarist Doug Rappoport heeft bij Edgar Winter gespeeld en bij Black ‘N Blue, bassist Timmer Blakely was al te horen op Gilbert’s kerstalbum _‘Twas_.
